High Mass

I love my Parish it feels familiar and The priest is great, however over the years (Im 31) it seems to have changed, I cant put my finger on it and they have a couple of guys and guitars at the front singing they’re heads off warbling every single note its so off putting and I cant pray I feel rushed, and unfulfilled at the end and it all seems a chore. So Have found a church that still uses 1962 missal High mass, now I have never experienced this before, what is it like? I dont really know latin, but I feel I may gain a deeper experience of Christ this way. The church is the Birmingham Oratory also where J.R.R Tolkien (whom I am a huge fan of) was raised by a priest. Many churches have Mass guides in the vestibule that you can use to follow the Latin accompanied by an English translation. Don’t fret over understanding it all. It is sufficiently like the OF so that you shouldn’t be completely lost. Use the time to meditate on Our Lord and Our Lady and you will be rewarded with graces. It isn’t important at your first High Mass to understand and participate throughout the entire Mass. You’ll know whats happening without understanding Latin - use the time to internalize your prayers to Our Lord.

I’ve been attending the LM for years and what I hear and see is that when young people go for the first time, they feel God’s Presence more and sense the sacred easier. They’re hooked! They are hooked without even knowing what is going on! Like my instincts told me the first time I returned was that it felt like grace was in the air! This will inspire you to go more and learn about it more.

I often attend a High Mass celebrated by the Toronto Oratorians. They are excellent priests and the Mass is amazing. As well as a beautiful Mass, you can expect sound teaching and lots of opportunities for Confession. You are blessed to have this in your life.

I attend the Birmingham Oratory, I am there at the weekly Missa Solemnis (10:30am EVERY Sunday of the Year plus on every First Class Feast, with a Low Mass on other specific feasts) either attending or serving on the Altar. I have to say, nothing matches the beauty of a Solemn High Mass with a talented Choir (and a thurifer who’s very liberal with the incense), I am going to attempt to attend the Sacred Triduum in the Extraordinary Form next year, my Spiritual Director is the Superior of the FSSP in England and Wales, and does Easter Retreats.

EDIT: You wish to attend the Oratory? They are the best Parish in this part of the Diocese, the most orthodox Priests you’ll ever meet (Fr Anton joked with me, since I attend a Byzantine Parish while at University, as I can’t stand the Latin, felt to much like a pentecostal community), you will love it. On a bonus, the Oratory is BEAUTIFUL!

This will be my new Parish now. It was so different and sacred and traditional, all kneeling at the altar for communion, it looked similar to the Hagia Sophia in Turkey. Why have they stripped the mass of this richness?

You was there today so was I , I wasn’t serving today as I spoke to the Frs prior to Mass and they had enough Servers for this Mass (especially considering I haven’t served a Solemn High Mass since The Epiphany, which coincidentally was at the Oratory). I may have actually noticed you, I noticed a few people knocking around that were not part of the ‘normal’ Mass group I tended to see there.

You can receive the Eucharist twice in one Liturgical day, any more times would be irregular, and if I remember is forbidden by Canon Law. Fr Anton is lovely, he takes an interest in everyone, quite likes how I’ve gone from Extraordinary Form and reverent Ordinary Form (I am at a Parish in West Heath as my domicile Parish, which I was received and confirmed at) to a Byzantine Parish at my University lol.

I wont be at the Oratory now until around the June area due to going back to University, however when I am next in Birmingham I will let you know! introduces you to one of the younger members of the Latin Mass Society (I am the main Server for South Birmingham when I am around, trained as an MC aswell, and have performed that role at 2 Solemn High Masses and 1 Solemn Requiem Mass)

You should only receive Holy Communion once per day. But since you didn’t know, there is no sin.

You can receive twice in one day as per Can. 917
Codex Iuris Canonici Canon 917:

One who has received the blessed Eucharist may receive it again on the same day only within a eucharistic celebration in which that person participates, without prejudice to the provision of can. 921 §2.

Canon 921 is in relation to the reception of Communion within the Sacrament of the Sick and extreme unction.
