Can someone tell me how many high-school seminaries are still in operation in the United States? Also, are there still convent high-schools for girls who believe they may have a vocation?

I can’t answer about minor seminaries, but as for aspirancies, as they used to be called, I don’t know if there are any left in the United States. There used to be loads of them. I think one of the last to go was the aspirancy for the Daughters of St. Paul.

Mission Statement

Inspired by the gospel of Jesus Christ and the example of Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Lawrence Seminary provides a residential college preparatory education in a living Catholic community nurturing mature, well-rounded men of faith, who prepare for a life of ministry as priest, religious and lay leaders in the Church and world.

At least part of the cause of high school seminaries closing was that the drop out rate (start to finish, start to finish college, start to finish high school) was too great for the costs of maintaining them. Maintaining a high school seminary included physical plant, staffing, oversight (they needed a bit more oversight than a college student, and definitely more than someone in their mid 20’s in theology), accreditation, and everything else connected with keeping it running was significantly expensive.

In addition, it was felt that it would be better if young men had more exposure to a more normal high school experience; and part of this may have been driven by the numbers of priests in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s who left the priesthood - some being laicized and some simply walking away - to get married. The thinking was that the isolation from normal high school (including going to dances, dates, and in general associating with girls) was not necessarily providing the maturity needed in relationships with women.

Whether that is right or wrong, it is certainly something I heard about as the process of closing some of them was going on.

I think the question was high school, not college.

Please note that this institution is designated as “college preparatory” which means that it is an extremely high academic High School which specifically prepares high school students for university.

Not all of the students will become priests. Some will become lay leaders in the Church and world. (from the Mission Statement)

From the Blog on website about graduation.
“Many will continue to explore God’s call to priesthood and Capuchin religious life. Others will serve the Church as committed and faithful laymen. In all of their vocations, the Church and the world are blessed and enriched.”

My thanks to everyone who responded. I appreciate it. --The Old Major
