High School Track Meet on Good Friday - Oy!

I’m really surprised they’re having an athletic event on Good Friday. All of the schools in my district always get off for Good Friday (even if they have to make up snow days, they either take away Holy Thursday or Easter Monday but we never had school on Friday). But then again we also always had off for the Jewish holidays, so go figure! 🤷 However from being an athlete in high school I do remember that the leagues did develop some very strange schedules due to the large number of schools they needed to accomodate.

I don’t think you’d be out of line in saying he isn’t participating on that day. They can’t really penalize him for it.

I take a vacation day from work. We will spend the day doing for others (this year, it will be in preparing food for the post-Vigil reception).

Will attend Friday services, will also watch “The Passion of the Christ”.
I do the same. No seriously, I need a resource to pass along to someone who always needs more than my traditions.

Thanks for all the responses.

As it happens the coaches readily excused my son (I get the impression that the one coach is rather devout himself, so I was surprised that our school was even participating in the meet.)

I also get the impression that our school will be way underrepresented at the meet: Partially because of parents like me are pulling our kids out for Good Friday and partially because the kids have to provide their own transporation to the meet (an hour’s drive from here) – no school that day, so no busses.

I know that colleges are typically open throughout the Triduum: I dread when my children go there.

God bless you and yours, during the Triduum, Easter and always.

In my experience, most professors will not schedule tests or other required activities on Good Friday. The ones who do will generally excuse students who will be celebrating a religious holiday. Also, because it’s relatively easy to get away with skipping classes in college, many Catholic students will stay home from class on Good Friday.

Generally, universities will allow students to reschedule academic commitments for valid religious holidays. They let the Jews and Muslims do it, so they have to let the Catholics do it too…

Hi:

A postscript: Our entire family of five plus my goddaughter-niece attended Good Friday services yesterday (my son in his Varsity jacket that clearly mentions track). After reading these posts (thanks again for all the responses), I felt especially blessed that our whole family was able to attend.

I live in SE Michigan and I have never heard of evening Good Friday services until now. I understand the necessity of them but feel sad that it’s such a necessity. (Thank heavens for the unions, the auto companies and the schools around here who, so far at least, have always called for Good Friday off.)

Have a blessed Easter,

Laura
