So then what? No one should marry. What about kids, “hey we’ll be around until we get bored” they you’ll be in the divorce shuffle between parents.I get what she means. Though I’ll modify it.
I don’t think everyone, or even most people are meant to be with the same person for life.
Not to speak for them, but there are a growing number of people that see marriage as nothing more than legal recognition of their serially monogamous relationships. So then what? No one should marry. What about kids, “hey we’ll be around until we get bored” they you’ll be in the divorce shuffle between parents.
Mary.
Hillary duff is a former disney channel star and singer.I never heard of Hilary Duff till just now. I thought Hillary Clinton changed her name and divorced Bill.
Of what expertise does Hilary Duff have on the topic before I stereotype her?![]()
Wow, talk about taking it to an absurd extreme…So then what? No one should marry. What about kids, “hey we’ll be around until we get bored” they you’ll be in the divorce shuffle between parents.

Out of honest curiosity, and I really do hope that you don’t misconstrue this as a personal attack, what would you say the purpose and essence of marriage? I’m endlessly fascinated by the answers people give, and I feel like both CAF and I have a bad habit of putting words in people’s mouth. We often think we know what most people mean when they think of marriage, but as a self-described non-believer, you have an opportunity to either confirm or reject that idea.Wow, talk about taking it to an absurd extreme…
Just saying that based on my observations and the surge of baby boomer divorces that life long marriage isn’t for most people. People should think long and hard about whether or not they have the qualities and personality traits to remain married. That means there are a lot of people who probably shouldn’t marry.
As far as kids go, those who become parents owe it to the kids to remain together at least until they are adults.
In the simplest form, marriage is a declaration and a promise between those involved to continue the relationship into forever plus opening up other possibilities such as having children (if those involved do choose). Everything else flows from this base.Out of honest curiosity, and I really do hope that you don’t misconstrue this as a personal attack, what would you say the purpose and essence of marriage? If that is the case, then let’s be honest about it. Let us make vows to stay together until one of us gets tired of being with the other. A statute of limitations and then marriage contract becomes null and void until renewed of course.I get what she means. Though I’ll modify it.

Into forever? Doesn’t that contradict what you said earlier, that most people are incapable of life long marriage commitment? Or do you think marriage is only for a select few?In the simplest form, marriage is a declaration and a promise between those involved to continue the relationship into forever plus opening up other possibilities such as having children (if those involved do choose). Yes, I would just reword the vows back into ‘forever’.If that is the case, then let’s be honest about it. Let us make vows to stay together until one of us gets tired of being with the other. A statute of limitations and then marriage contract becomes null and void until renewed of course.
To all the nonbelievers here, would you marry if that was the case?
I’ve seen this modification before. If that is the case, then let’s be honest about it. Let us make vows to stay together until one of us gets tired of being with the other. A statute of limitations and then marriage contract becomes null and void until renewed of course.

I have (thankfully) only ever been to one wedding where the vows were changed to accommodate this kind of nonsense. They vowed to live according to the societal norms of ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ for ‘as long as their love shall last’. Sure enough, they divorced less than 4 years later.I’ve seen this modification before.
“For as long as we both shall -]live/-] love”
Seems a bit more honest, IMHO
The main reason why divorce is so high is due to premarital sex. The baby boomers brought fornication into vogue with their “make love not war” and “free love” slogans.Wow, talk about taking it to an absurd extreme…

Not at all. It just means that a couple needs to carefully consider if this is something they can successfully commit to. If not then perhaps marriage isn’t for them, at that time.Into forever? Doesn’t that contradict what you said earlier, that most people are incapable of life long marriage commitment?
Not a select few, but not as many as currently marry based on the divorce rates and general observations. I’d say that determination is for the couple involved.Or do you think marriage is only for a select few?
