I’m a member of Catholic Charismatic community here in the Philippines…and were playing hillsongs during our praise and worship…

does it matter? BTW, whats their denomination? never heard of them being anti-Catholic…
Yes it matters, they are a Pentacostal church, They are very anti-catholic, their music should not be played in a Catholic Church, even the Charismatic Renewal ones. I just sent a complaint letter to their TV email address. Last Sunday they broadcast a very tasteless sermon about Brian Houston’s encounter with JP2 during which he made jokes about the Pope’s security measures. I made another thread about it here:

oh…gosh!..but we have been playing their songs…during praisefest and our Christian Life programs, household prayer meetings…

im a member of a Couples for Christ ministry…and I think 60%of the songs we used to play are from the hillsongs…

need to highlight this one to our leaders…oh…

While I do not agree with their pastor, the use of their music, which can be rather uplifting to catholics, is not practice Catholic Churches should do regularly, and any of their music played needs to fit in line with Catholic beliefs and should be reviewed, however their music as I said is quite uplifting and their music pastor Darlene is a fantastic christian performer.

The real moral question of the situation is should we be giving other rival and anti-catholic church’s our cash through music sales? I myself say if one finds the music uplifting and useful in actually helping you with your Catholic beliefs, it is perhaps justified that one may like some of the music so long as one distances the music from the church, denomination or even the beliefs of the performer. I still like the Michael Jackson song “Thriller”, but that doesn’t mean I like or support the personal life and beliefs of the person who performs it. I have 4 Hillsong Albums myself, 2 of them are the Christmas ones which I got because of the traditional hymns, mostly Anglican, on them.

The same standards must be applied to beautiful Anglican Hymnals or other forms of protestant Christian music(God thank you for inventing Gospel music, and thank you for allowing us to hear it through Mr. Elvis Prestley himself, Amen.) that one may enjoy.

oh well…thanks for the enlightenment…

God Bless!

As to mass on TV: It is a wonderful outreach to fallen-away Catholics like I used to be. Watching a mass on TV 12 years ago was what made me realize how scriptural and beautiful the mass is. Eventually, I came back to the Church and I love the mass (in person!).

God love you,
Paul

As far a Protestant hymns go, I don’t think Catholic Churches actually buy Protestant hymnals; and most of the traditional Protestant hymns are old enough to be in the public domain, so no royalty money would be paid to use them. So if a Catholic Church wishes to sing traditional Protestant hymns, there would be no monetary support of anything anti-Catholic. The music director would just need to ensure that the hymns chosen do not have lyrics that are contrary to Catholic belief.
