I bought one. It’s meant to ionize the air and I got it because my neighbors right next to me smoke a lot and to make the air better for me. I stupidly bought it from a new age store which is bad because it’s supporting new age stuff… But is having this lamp in my house sinful?

If you are not using it for new age stuff, I don’t think it would be sinful. :)

Concur.

The action of using a lamp does not in itself, partake in or support new-age beliefs; it is just a physical device.

If it’s just an air purifier I’m sure it’s fine.

I’m not sure of what the situation was, but going to a new age store for an air purifier instead of a normal supplier is a bit ‘off.’

Well the new age store sells these lamps because they are a crystal and you know how they sell other crystals. I must admit I like the look of it because it is a warm colour but I did buy it mostly to purify the air.

It might be sinful if you don’t have a pepper lamp to go with it!😃

Does it actually work to “clean the air”?

Your fine unless you bow to it. You didn’t buy it with the intention of supporting new age agenda. Though I understand your point. You could return it maybe and buy one from another source. My Catholic friends have one in each bedroom for their children to purify the air for allergy reasons. They bought them from a lady in our area who sells them for her disabled child.

It ionizes the air… I think you can still smell cigarette when neighbors smoke but the lamp works to ionize air it’s meant to make the air the way it is after a storm.
I don’t know about returning it as I don’t know where else to get one.

Then don’t worry about it. Use it in good faith.

Just an average sinner’s MX$2 worth.

I’ve had a large one for about 4 years. I hadn’t turned it on in over 2 until I saw this thread. The store I bought it at didn’t seem to be a New Age store. I see nothing wrong with having one. As long as you aren’t saying it’s having supernatural powers I don’t see where it’s a sin. I find the way it glows relaxing.

I find it’s nice to look at too. Has yours leaked for not having on for so long? I had one in the past that leaked because I had not used it

Funny you should ask. I was wondering why there was salt around it. Do you know what causes that? It’s never happened before. I thought maybe moisture from the air had gotten into it and affected the bound of salt particles.

well it is made up of salt, hehe 🙂
probably yes it has to do with the moisture

Unless buying the product directly helps causes against Catholic beliefs(rather than what the store does with its profits), It is most likely not sinful. I have the lamp you mentioned (I got it for Christmas one year) but I’ve never used it. I would take whatever these things claim to do with a grain of salt, and do some research on them, too.

If it cleans the air great, if it doesn’t that’s alright b/c I love the way it looks.

Well, we might discuss the “technology” behind holy water, which is after all a mild saline solution, ionized and consecrated to God. Here’s Japanese researcher Masaru Emoto’s photos of frozen crystals of water, including a sample from Lourdes. Of note may be the water that was exposed to an ugly intent looking like the sample from a polluted stream. unitedearth.com.au/watercrystals.html

It’s the natural moisture in the air that ionizes the salt crystal lamp and makes it act as a purifier, I suggest. You can, of course, have kosher or any additive-free salt itself blessed by a priest–I think there is a specific blessing–and then have “just add water” holy water as two priests have done in my experience, or use it dry as a blessing.

These salt lamps–reminiscent of John Paul II’s early years as a salt miner–are theoretically much safer than the majority of ionizing air purifiers that will often put out a substantial amount of ozone, which can create free radicals that toast one’s lungs and aggravate the heart-lung system. These systems, like the tower from Sharper Image, can be used in basements or isolated areas that have mold that needs to be zapped, but should not be in direct living spaces.
