Pretty sure it’s Catholics that tries to be cool and different, usually youths. Call themselves Catholics but pretty much make their own rules

Could be wrong though

Definitely age connected. I don’t think of hipsters as being old. Hippies, yes. Hipsters, no. 😃

Hmm interesting… After looking it up I can’t decide if these are young Catholics who are counter-cultural in ways, or Catholics who blend their faith with particularly “cool” countercultural things. (And dress in a trendy way, use social media, eat organic food, etc).

Do you think its maybe too centred on our ‘image’?

I can be countercultural… But probably not in a “cool” way 🙂 so maybe I wouldn’t qualify as a “hipster” Catholic (which is ok)

Am I understanding this right?

For example - a young woman goes to the Latin Mass, wears only skirts, - countercultural, yes, but not “hipster”. What would make her a “hipster” Catholic?

I am pro-life, anti SS"M", anti-birthcontrol, and pro religion. Sounds pretty counter-cultural if I do say so myself, but alas I just checked my expiration date and it looks like I am 15 - 20 years past the hipster age range. Shucks I can’t be one of the cool kids. 😛

On a side note, I always find it funny when a group is “counter-cultural” by creating their own culture that others aspire too. Once culture accepts them as mainstream do they need to change again to become counter-“counter-cultural”?

And yes we are too centered on image. I was thinking about a pair of jeans that the local homeless shelter rejected because of a small hole near the back pocket and frayed lower hems, and compared it to the fact that many young people will pay $80-100+ for jeans that are ripped and look to have dirt ground into the thighs. So people will pay big bucks to wear clothes in worse shape than those rejected by a homeless shelter? 🤷

Yes I agree… Some things started off as being counter cultural and then became “trendy”.

Not sure if I’m a Catholic “hipster” or not. Probably not. I don’t think I’d be “cool” enough 😉 and I’m not trying to be. I feel countercultural enough- I’m a traditionalist Catholic, pro life, anti contraception, anti same-sex “marriage”, the way I dress is a bit different I guess cause I wear longer skirts. I listen to classical music. I don’t have any social media except a blog. (Im also a young adult). But I don’t do these things as a “style”, its just what I believe or like. I’m not really “countercultural” in any other way. I guess I’m still not completely sure what “hipster” is. I’m just curious cause it keeps coming up online. 🙂

Hipster now has a negative connotation to it-someone that tries too hard to be cool and different

Idk what hipster catholic means, since being a catholic is already uncool to society

Don’t worry about labels, you do you 🙂

I keep hearing this term… What does it mean?
Hipster doesn’t just mean “counter-cultural”, it’s a subculture with a particular sensibility. A big part of it is liking older, outdated, and now unfashionable things but in a way that’s both ironic (and so fully conscious of the fact that society thinks it’s unfashionable) and embraces a more ‘authentic’ life. And let’s keep those quotes around authentic.

You can’t be a “Catholic hipster” in a country where most people are Catholics. You could be a Catholic and a hipster separately, but what makes you a “Catholic hipster” needs to involve taking something uncool and making it cool by your ironic embrace of authenticity.

I would usually think of a Christian hipster with being Orthodox, rather than Catholic as Catholics are too well known. You want an excuse to grow a big beard and say “Yeah, I’m Orthodox. You probably haven’t heard of it”

I see… I read somewhere (not about the Catholic, but the secular version of this) that hipsters aren’t that liked because it can seem pretentious or too trendy. Like trying to be cool by being different (and like you said, “authentic”), but for the sake of being cool. (I’m not commenting on actual “hipsters” here, just the perception of the movement).

I even found something about “traditionalist hipster Catholics” which is kind of funny and it made me realize that this isn’t me. I’m just a boring mainstream traditionalist- which is maybe liking the older things but without any irony or desire to be cool. churchpop.com/2015/03/06/12-signs-you-might-be-a-hipster-traditionalist/

(I do tend to believe stories about the Saints though).

This is hilarious… Especially the Pope Pius clock: churchpop.com/2015/06/24/awesomely-obscure-gifts-for-the-catholic-hipster-in-your-life/

(Some stuff in that link is actually kind of neat. Lol)

I think I’m starting to understand what a Catholic hipster is a bit more now.

I see what you mean about the connotation

I agree about labels 👍

The joke about hipsters is that they like music for example, and want it to be elite. “Oh, I listen to XYZ. You’ve probably never heard of them.”

I can see how there could be hipster Catholics. As mentioned earlier, their dress, social media use age, eating habits, and yes, their Catholicism. Among the other young people they know, they may stand out or be different because they attend mass, go to adoration, or engage in pre-marital sex. Hipster to the world in their own way. And yes, unliked for it as hipsters sometimes can be. “We are going to Adoration…you’ve probably never heard of it.” 😉

And here I thought hipsters were old! Like in their 30s and 40s. Driving Volvos and stuff like that.

 That should have said **NOT **engage…

I need to do a better job proofreading. 😉

Or the other Hipster stereotype:

“I was going to Adoration before it was cool.”

All in all, I think it is a good thing. It is a way of being counter cultural and in this sense at least being a force against the culture of death.
The “Godfather of hipsterdom” is Gavin Mcguinnes (sp), a Catholic Convert. And a founder of vice video. WARNING, he works blue, if you see his videos.

How do you drown a hipster?

In the mainstream.

Hipster:

Geezer Catholics who have had hip replacement surgery. :coffeeread:

I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen a hipster in real life before. It sometimes makes me doubt whether it’s a thing or just some meme created on the Internet. I’ve also never been on an elevator with music before and it’s easy to believe that they never existed outside being the butt of some joke on TV. Then again, I also thought that tater tots were a myth before I got to high school and been in a cafeteria for the first time. What is the hipster’s natural habitat, that I’ve never actually run into one?
