I have been there in all but the pregnancy with another man’s baby. It’s not worth it. Celibacy is better than that. I wasn’t there just once either. It was five times. This is just the first time his crazy wife decided to come back because she has another man’s baby. Imagine how much worse it will get.

I can tell you exactly how much worse it can get: she can take off a second time, and sue him for child support to provide for this other man’s baby.

It’s not worth it. There is the ideal that the Catholic Church recommends, and then there is the reality of the American family court system. In no rational universe does risking further indenture to that woman make a lick of sense.

The Catholic Church only demands that we live chaste lives and not remarry outside of the Church. It doesn’t demand we submit to that kind of abuse (and that’s exactly what this article has praised) or risk economic indenture to another human being simply because that other person decided to abrogate a contract.

I am sorry if that came off as harsh, but that article really bothered me. Imagine if it were the other way around, and some man was out sleeping with other women, abandoned his wife and kids, and then decided he wanted to reunite the family after he ended up with a baby left to him by one of his previous lovers.

If we lived in a just society, then I too would think he is brave and virtuous for his forgiveness and willingness to reunite his family. But we don’t live in a just society. We live in the United States, which every year grows closer to the opposite of a just society.

We actually don’t find out what happens to the child in the story.

In my opinion, the best option would be to put the child up for adoption, or else let his natural father take full custody of him.

In this seemingly God forsaken world… stories of forgiveness and perseverence on the scale that this man has demonstrated, inspire me with great hope and determination to be more godly in my own life. I think it happened so much more in the ‘old days’ that people forgave and accepted a child into their lives in such a way. These days we are more ‘justice, justice, justice’ and not so much mercy, forgiveness and grace unfortunately. Anything is possible with love.

What is the point of this link? The article is by a pro-life dr and as I read it, his advice to the betrayed husband was that abortion was not the answer which is correct. The child shouldn’t be killed because of the sins of the mother and boyfriend. It’s incomplete because we don’t know the end result and what happen to the baby and family. Since there are other children in the home, it probably would be impossible to place the child for adoption. In a similar thought, there are married women that end up pregnant due to rape and they end up keeping the baby in the family. I remember one such situation published by Focus on the Family where the wife was raped, became pregnant. She wanted to keep the child and the husband slowly came around. What complicated it more was that the rapist was a different race than the white couple so the daughter was biracial and obviously didn’t match the husband. Over time, both loved and saw the daughter as a gift and the daughter was very close to the husband even more than the mom. I guess that is what I see in this story, a very hard and tough situation that with time and forgiveness, God can bring something beautiful out of.
