An article posted on IGN about “His Dark Materials” novels and upcoming HBO drama where it’s stated:

" “Phillip Pullman in these books is not attacking belief, is not attacking faith. He’s not attacking religion or the church, per se,” she argued, according to [The Hollywood Reporter]

“He’s attacking a particular form of control, where there is a very deliberate attempt to withhold information, keep people in the dark, and not allow ideas and thinking to be free.”

The author has a very anti-Catholic stance as anyone who is familiar of his work, “the Golden Compass” would know.

The comments under the article are anti-religious and anti-Catholic filled with posts like, “Meanwhile: ‘I hope the wretched Catholic church will vanish entirely’ - The author of the f------ books.” which is responded to with “that would be a step in the right direction.”

“The way I see it having faith is very different from having religion. Faith comes from within, religion comes from without. It’s just unfortunate that many peoples faith has been manipulated by religion, which is where the control of ones beliefs happens.”

"“He’s attacking a particular form of control, where there is a very deliberate attempt to withhold information, keep people in the dark, and not allow ideas and thinking to be free.”

Right, religion. Especially the western ones."

“That careful message is always “shut up and think as you’re told”. Sh–, Jesus’ whole thing was throwing off the authoritarian religion and just love everybody, and after he died the church spent 2000 years turning that back into “shut up and think what we tell you to think, and hate”.”

A: " Replace the churches with housing for homeless people. Thats way more useful."

B: “Would that be so bad? How many more alter boys need be molested?”

C. “Thankfully the Catholic Church is excellent on the social issues. Best to make abortion punishable by death penalty and get rid of the mental illness of transgenderism. Those two issues alone gives them my support :)

Church scandal stuff, pro-abortion stuff, pro-transgender stuff, “religion created for control”, and generally a lot of things slamming religion, faith, Church, and our dear Lord.

IGN is the biggest video game and pop culture site in the world, and also one of the most visited sites in general (ranked at #178). It’s filled with many impressionable young minds who are afraid to or don’t know how to stand up to anti-Catholic/anti-Christian/anti-relgion comments. The lack of defense from others could shape them.
These “discussions” pop up an a regular basis and appear mostly one-sided. It almost seems like the other side is non-existent. It’s always the case on “nerd culture” sites when it comes to topics dealing in faith and religion. They could use some good Catholic apologists and philosophers there

It’s anti-Catholic, anti-Anglican, anti-Oxford and Cambridge, anti-C.S. Lewis, anti-all other English fantasy books for kids and all other English fantasy writers, and anti-Pullman’s dad the Anglican clergyman.

The storyline also promotes suicide, nihilism, atheism, teenage premarital sex, and several other isms.

But you know, other than that…

To be fair, Pullman does have some very nice fantasy stuff in his books, by all accounts – or at least, in Book One. But the rest is so hateful. I’m a longtime fantasy reader, and I couldn’t get past the second chapter of the first book. (Although I might have tried harder, except that the book was lost in the general wreck of a fair amount of luggage getting lost. After that, I didn’t feel inclined to give the book another try.)

I think they should represent the author’s vision authentically, as erroneous as we might believe it to be, and I hope Netflix or Amazon don’t weaken the Christian visions that inspired Narnia and Middle-Earth, respectively. In a pluralistic society we have to let ideas enter the arena freely and trust that truth will defeat error. Of course Catholic parents have the right to censor what their children view as entertainment; but the counter-argument is that Catholics are indoctrinating their children into a false worldview.

So perhaps it’s best not to censor things that are not grotesquely objectionable (e.g. depicting obscene sex or violence) but prepare young people with a balanced education so they can think critically and judge for themselves. Personally I believe the Catholic worldview is vastly superior in its consistency, integrity and resilience at every level of human experience: rationally, practically and aesthetically; but it’s best to let it be tested. Don’t shelter the faith: expose it to attack, even vicious attack, and marvel at the result. The Church is not weakened, but strengthened, this way (the weakness we are in now is from a betrayal in the Church of her teachings by her leaders, not an attack from the outside by her enemies).

I was mocking this sentence:

Hilarious! 😆

@Neithan I agree. If you wouldn’t mind re-reading my post, you would notice that my issue isn’t the content itself, but the one-sided “discussions” that stem from these topics on pop-culture/nerd sites.

The writer of this article is Adele Ankers from the UK. On her twitter page…(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

You are right. Comic Con is something most young identify with. Many have seen Star Wars and Marvel. It is an area that needs Catholic voices.

I think gamer Ninja helped to raise the issue when he came out and said he was almost aborted.
