The church I attend is not overly decorated at all here in Kentucky. But it does have some beautiful stained glass windows. What I like to do is after mass is to sit in the pews or walk up and down the side aisles and study the windows. Just glancing they are pretty but truly looking at them up close you find the Gifts of the Holy Ghost, stories of saints or a specific saint, virtues, etc.
I think alot of people anymore go to mass to do their Sunday duty then rush out afterwards instead of spending time with our Lord. That quiet time is when the paintings, statues and glass-work comes into play. The height of the older churches helps to raise ones eyes to the heavens, and if the ceilings have beautiful artwork so much the better.
Somebody mentioned the hideous(my opinion) resin statues. Just a quick look online will find many outlets selling century’s old true work of art statues from the gutted old churches of Europe and the US. Altars, vessels, candlesticks, etc. And their clientele are bars, restaurants, offices, etc.??? What a sacrilege and shame that our beautiful Catholic faith is being sold for secular “decorations”. Do we really devalue our faith so much in an effort to kiss and make up with those who broke from our faith centuries ago?
I have been in “modern churches”. Try to find the Stations of the Cross", usually hidden near the rafters and so small it’s almost a moot point of putting them up. Banners with fall leaves hung all over the sanctuary and walls. Crucifixes with what looks like a “touchdown” Jesus on them. Not our suffering Lord but one that looks like He is calling a football game. Round altars, no Tabernacle in the center but off in some room to the back. No pews but chairs with kneelers attached. And lets not forget the ever present piano, front and center. And the area for the guitars, drums, xylophone, etc. It’s almost like an orchestra pit and takes up alot of space. Barf. (Yes, I know my opinion) How does something like that give glory to God??? I don’t get.
