Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott was very good. Some people think it’s too slow, but I thought it was very good.

I read this book when I was a teenager and loved it! Same for Ben Hur–I actually refused to stop reading it in class, even when the teacher asked me. (Brat!)

I forgot to mention another excellent book by Irving Stone about MICHELANGELO called “THE AGONY AND THE EXSTASY”.
it is marvelous.
 
For younger readers, Elizabeth George Speare is good. If you like something a tad stranger, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro St. Germaine novels are usually pretty good, but they are definitely not for children.

Read Colleen McColloughs Master of Rome series set in the final days of the republic. She has meticulously researched the year and is a great writer.

Another great one is Michael Shaara’s “The Killer Angels” an account of the battle of Gettysburg, The prequel and sequels written by his son Jeff are not nearly as good
 
Another great one for those interested in Romeis “I Claudius” by Robert Graves
