War of 1812 - Washington DC gets burned to the ground, US government retreats to Baltimore, national anthem, Andrew Jackson takes New Orleans after the war is over…
Mexican War - A preview to the Civil War. It’d be interesting to see people like Zachary Taylor working with his son-in-law, Jefferson Davis, or US Grant working with Robert E. Lee… Plus, the Battle of Mexico City was quite an affair.
Spanish-American War - Teddy Roosevelt in the “Splendid Little War”. American filibusters smuggled guns to the island before the war (like Stephen Crane). Plus, it’s my current area of research.

Ooh…Spanish-American War could be good, IF done accurately. From what I’ve read, it was kind of similar to the Mexican War in that the U.S. government pushed the weaker country into war to take over some territory.

Well, there was The Buccaneer back in the 50s with Charlton Heston as Andrew Jackson and Yul Brynner as Jean Lafitte.
But it was really hokey - particularly to anyone who has ever been to Chalmette or been in a Louisiana swamp.
Andrew Jackson is a fascinating character in his own right.

I’d like to see some thing on the life of Lafayette… he was pretty cool.
Also, Vlad the Impaler (whom my history teacher calls “the savior of Christianity”… (I know, he’s not…)) would be another interesting subject.
Maybe also something about Augustus and Mark Antony… or Tiberius… or a historically correct and (fairly) clean retelling of Caligula’s life that my parents might ACTUALLY let me watch. (Of course, they ARE making I, Claudius into a film (release date 2010!)

A great movie on the IRISH fight for freedom on dvd THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY, the ending is a shocker and sad thats all I will tell you, if you watch it you will see why it didn’t make the mainline movie theater because of our love affair with england

I don’t know anyone who saw the movie with irish roots who didn’t cry or will not cry if they watch it. the ending very sad, you wonder how that could happen between brothers. if you think thats sad you should read about Crommwell and what he did to Irish CATHOLICS , read Irish version not englands sanitized version

I am actually working on a novel and screenplay abut the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland and the subsequent and unfortunate slave trade of the Irish Catholics and Royalist supporters to the sugar plantations of the British West Indies. Sound interesting?

The Revolt of the Maccabees. I had heard somewhere that Mel Gibson was going to do it following “The Passion”, but then he did Apocalypto instead. Not sure how true that is, though.

It does not go on to show what he did in Ireland and leaves you with the impression that he was this heroic figure or the fact that his body was exhumed and “executed” for his crimes against the state.

I should have added that the novel / screenplay would be through the eyes of a pair of children forced to flee as the Cromwell’s New Model Army swept the countryside in search of Cavaliers and for those who participated in the Irish Rebellion of 1641. I apologize if I gave the impression that I thought Cromwell was some sort of hero. Personally, I believe he was a bast*rd! (I apologize if that offends anyone.) His actions against the people of Ireland were dreadfully heinous and I understand why there is still animosity between Ireland and the United Kingdom still. There is a debt that can never be repaid to the people of Ireland. Especially, the capture and sale of 2000 Irish boys and girls shipped and sold into sexual slavery to the sugar plantation owners of Barbados. I can not even fathom having my child taken from my arms and sold to some deprave plantation owner for his sexual desires.

I saw this movie awhile ago, and in my humble opinion, it completely glossed over the brutality he (Cromwell) took out on the people of Ireland. Cromwell had laws passed that confiscated and dispossessed land from Irish Catholic landowners, relocating them to the rocky and uninhabitable land in Connacht, hence the phrase, “To Hell or to Connacht.” He had laws passed that outlawed any Irish self-rule. There were laws preventing any Irish Catholic from landownership or leadership office. Cromwell even consented to the sale of 80,000 to 125,000 Irish Catholics and supporters of Charles I as slaves to Barbados and the Virginia Colonies in support of burgeoning sugar and tobacco plantations. (Admittedly, the number of slaves taken from Ireland isn’t documented with any kind of historical accuracy, and is a pitiance to the number of slaves taken from West Africa.) These actions, in fact, have lead to several hundred years of pure hatred and agression that reached its culmination in the Irish War for Independence in 1920-1922.
