I’m an artist and I’d like to make drawings of saints. Are there any resources that would help me to know what sort of vestments or habits that priests and religious would have worn in different regions and historical time periods (websites or books)?

I can’t help but look at some holy cards and think “that’s totally not what saint so-and-so would have looked like.” For example, St. Patrick wearing an elaborate miter and chasuble from the baroque period is completely anachronistic. Anyway, thanks in advance 😉

Just bumping my question.

Anyone? Maybe such a thing doesn’t exist and I have some serious research to do!

I’m sorry that I don’t have any other resources for you, but do send Shawn Tribe an email.

I am interested in your project, however, maybe you could post some drawing here when you get them finished.

It’s wonderful to see someone using Holy Week for something truly holy, by the way.

A blessed Triduum to you,

Thanks everyone! That seems like a very good direction to start in.

Right now I have my hands full with a baby girl, plus I just moved to a new city (must update location from “Irvine” to “Seattle”). But once everything settles down, I have it mind to make this an ongoing project. I’ll have to post some updates here once I have something new.

For now, here I am guilty of perpetuating a very non-400’s A.D. St. Patrick 😉

Thanks for the suggestion. I contacted Shawn Tribe and he gave me a good reading list, many of which he says I can probably find on Google Books or archive.org:
  • Dom E. Roulin, Vestments and Vesture
  • Herbert Norris, Church Vestments: Their Origin and Development
  • J. Wickham Legg, Church Ornaments and their Civil Antecedents
  • Adrian Fortescue, The Vestments of the Roman Rite
  • Wharton Marriott, Vestiarium Christianum: The Origin and Gradual Development of the Dress of Holy Ministry in the Church
  • The Catholic Encyclopedia
  • the works of Fr. Joseph Braun (German)
