Historicity in the gospels

Something is bothering me about the gospels.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, we’re told that Jesus made a prayer and was very distressed by the situation he was in.

But weren’t the disciples sleeping? How could this gospel writer have known what Jesus was saying if everybody else around was asleep at the time?

The most obvious answer would be that he simply told them what had happened .

How did Moses know the beginning of the world he wrote in the Book of Genesis? The Holy Spirit! Same with the Gospels, except for those who reject this level of inspiration by the Holy Spirit and need a “Q source” to explain the similarities in the synoptic gospels. If the beginning of the Book of Genesis is so inspired by the Holy Spirit then the similarities of the synoptics and the knowledge of Jesus in the garden by a trio of sleeping apostles is easily explained, but maybe not so easily believed.

Ever fallen asleep during something? You remember up to the time you began to fall asleep. Think about it: Jesus spent hours praying, but the gospels only record a single sentence-long prayer. So the evidence ***is ***consistent with them falling asleep.

I think the clues lie in how many times Jesus had to go back to them and finding them asleep. 3 times He want back to them so they were obviously awake for parts of this event. Parts of Jesus’ prayer are brought out in the Gospels, one must have saw the angel minister to him and give him strength in between the dozing or else that tidbit would not have made it into Luke’s gospel.

Also note that Jesus was with the disciples for 40 days after His Resurrection. He may have told them much about His Passion in that time.

Indeed. I imagine that Jesus would want us to know much of what his disciples had not directly seen. Being human, they could not have noticed everything, so Jesus had to give them a bit of help.
