Are there any good books or articles on the history and development of Eastern vestments, vessels and church architecture? I dare say I’m well versed in the Western development, especially because of the work of the liturgical movement in the early 20th century.

I’m having trouble finding similar sources on the East, however. The few Orthodox I know aren’t really helpful at all, they say that thinking about such things leads to liturgical archaeology.

Thanks in advance. 🙂

There is a very basic book called “The Law of God” that goes into architecture, vestments, liturgical vessels (chalices etc). This book does not go deeply and is also a chatechism.

You can get it from Holy Trinity monastery and seminary, they have a web site and mail order.

There is a podcast by Fr. Thomas Hopko on Ancient Faith Radio calld “Worship in Spirit and in Truth”. He talks about the Divine Liturgy in depth, and as part of the primer he had a 7-part podcast on vestments.

Look that up.

this is the book i recommend to everyone wanting to know more about the liturgics of Greek-Eastern Christianity, the descriptions and histories of the stuff may be a little too brief for what you’re looking for but for the price its worth it
