History book recommendations please

I joined the Catholic Church 8 years ago. I have read many books and finally got around to reading A Concise History of the Cathokic Church. By the end of the book I realized the author, Thomas Bokenkotter, had a liberal agenda. It was very obvious by the last 3 or 4 chapters.
I converted from the Episcopal church, so I witnessed firsthand what happens when liberal progressives take over the Church.
I wanted to be Catholic because of the moral stance of Church teachings.
Can someone please recommend a good history book on the Catholic church written by someone who is not criticizing the Church while presenting the history? I was surprised that Bokenkotter is a priest. I got an overall view of what the Catholic church has been through in its
2000 year history, but I am hoping there are better books out there to read.
Also, I would like recommendations on books about the history of the American Catholic Church and also a good book on Vatican II.

“Triumph-Power-Glory-Catholic-Church” by H.W. Crocker, III

“How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization” by Thomas E. Woods

Both can be purchased used on Amazon for very reasonable prices and I’ve found both at our community library.
 
I read “History of the Catholic Church: From the Apostolic Age to the Third Millennium” by James Hitchcock cover to cover when it came out a couple years back. This may be more what you’re looking for, no agenda as such. My one criticism is that, even clocking in at over 500 pages, there were many times I wish it went into further depth on a particular topic.

While I did not see any issues the few times I looked up stuff in Concise History, people whose opinion I respect have made the same observations you have.

The Woods book is also good, though his tone drifts into mild triumphalism on occasion. You will learn several neat details about varied areas like the law, education, science etc that you may never have heard from elsewhere.
 
I’ve been reading a lot of Rodney Stark lately; sociologist with a strong interest in history, particularly concerning historical narratives created with an anti-Catholic agenda.

Also read an interesting concise history of the crusades by Thomas Madden; very good.

Regarding Vatican II

Have you read the documents? Do that first.
Read the intent of the Council.

Thanks! I have wanted to read the one by Woods for a long time. I will look for them on Amazon. 👍

I have heard of this book by Hitchcock.
I try to find books at the used bookstore, but I currently live in a small town and the Catholic section is small. I will check prices on Amazon for this one too.

Think I have heard of his work also. I need to write the authors in my notebook so I don’t forget.

I find the history of the Catholic church in America fascinating because of how fast it grew from immigration from Ireland, Italy, Germany and Poland.

Great Book I read iT last week and reviewing the footnotes this week.
A lifelong student of history I wasn’t aware of codenexisting in Spainish culture which governed the treatment if slaves, which ,recognized them as human, baptised them allow them to marry and more importantly included a way for slaves to become Freeman,

I just watched a talks on the Babtism of Clovis ( one of the most significant events in Christain history)King of the Franks.
Also the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD ,
The fall of Constantanople to the Turks.
Amazing resource.

I have read all of the books listed in this thread. Warren Carroll’s work is worth the investment.
