Good question… not exactly sure when the scientific definition of “fertility cycle” was introduced…
Obviously, it’s always been known that not EVERY act of intercourse produces a pregnancy… experience will teach that.
And, there were forms of artificial birth control used for thousands of years (hence the writings of the Early Church Fathers)…
The point of NFP is that it remains in line with the Church’s teachings of morality… no moral teaching is added or taken away… no matter WHEN NFP was “introduced”…

This may sound like a smart-alecky answer, but I mean it sincerely. Total abstinence has been around since people understood that marital relations causes babies. The earliest form of “NFP” was total abstinence if pregancy was to be avoided. The NFP today is periodic abstinence–a couple abstains during the known fertile time, but it does nothing to interfere with each individual act to make it infertile. As far as I know the Church has never taught that couples must have all the children physically possible, but that we are generous with our family.
