What is the history behind not eating meat on Fridays? Who established it, when, and why? I am looking for the history of this practice and why it is binding on Catholics.
Tradition and the gospels hold that Our Lord was crucified on a Friday. Since this was the most sorrowful point in the life/death of Our Lord it is fitting that we should sacrifice something to remember it. As far as I am aware, we are required to fast from something on fridays though it used to be meat EVERY friday and not just lent.
