History of Philosophy

Hey all,

Can anyone here recommend a history of philosophy that is not hostile to the Catholic faith? I’ve been looking at the series by Gilson; as well as the series by Copleston: amazon.com/History-Philosophy-1-Frederick-Copleston/dp/0385468431/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1254410863&sr=1-1

Any other suggestions?

Socrates to Sartre by Samuel Enoch Stumpf was one I was recommended to read. Stumpf was a prof. emeritus at Vanderbilt and the text is a classic, recently brought up to date stylistically etc by a new coauthor.

Highly readable. Clean, knowledgeable entries.

Roger Scruton has a history of modern philosophy that is very good – although it is all Descartes or later.

Fr. Copleston’s work is the best I have come across. I wouldn’t suggest it to the person with absolutely no philosophical background because it can be a little dense at times, but there is really no better nor more comprehensive work on the topic.

If you are looking for an in-depth study, I would stick with Copleston; if you are looking for a good, one-volume, overall survey, I would recommend *The Philosophical Journey *by William Lawhead.
