I know that St. Therese used sacrifice beads beginning at an early age. The idea of slipping a bead along a line of string for each sacrifice offered up was introduced to her by her mother.

What I would like to know is if the idea of these beads was developed by her mother or were sacrifice beads a common sacramental of the time? In other words were other Catholics buying/making and using sacrifice beads?

Dear AServantofGod,

I did a quick searh on the google search engine
under “sacrifice beads Therese Liseaux” and
looked at what came up, but then my head
got tired and I gave up the search !
Just thought I’d let you know that some
websites did come up on the google search.

Dear reen12,

I had done a similar search, &, yes, my head spun too. I also did a search on the history of prayer beads. That was equally daunting. That’s why I came here. I was hoping that somebody might just know the answer - a bead expert or somesuch. Wishful thinking!

Thanks for trying on my behalf.

Dear AServantof God,

You’re welcome!

PS Can you recall the source that you read that
indicated that Therese learned of this practice
from her mother? If her mother taught her this,
then it was either something her mother devised
to aid herself in her devotional life, or could it
have been a French devotional practice, in
which case a search of French Catholic
devotional practices, 19th century might
provide an answer.

“Even Theresa want to start making sacrificies now. Marie given each of the little ones a chaplet on which they can keep count of their good deeds…The most charming thing of all is to see Theresa slipher hand in her pocket time and time again and move a bead along as she makes some sacrificies.”

Maybe you should search for chaplet?

Peace,
Jen

How about sharing the directions of making them and also what you taught the kids about using them? My son is making his first communion this year and your idea is excellent.

Yes, please share, this sounds like “fun” to me.

I have been trying to find out who started using sacrifice beads myself.

I love sacrifice beads and think that they can really help people grow quickly in their relationship with God. The first time I saw a set I fell in love with them and decided that I would help get them into as many people’s hands as possible.

I have a website called The Little Ways dedicated to promoting sacrifice beads - where people can order them, learn about St. Theresa and in the future I hope to add alot more information to it.

The goal is to have instructions including photographs on how to make sacrifice beads online within the next few weeks. The website is continually being updated: www.thelittleways.com

These beads are great for children doing their First Communion in fact we are getting our youth group to make them for all the children doing their first communions at our parish this Sunday.

I had never even heard of these before and now they are all over…crazy…thanks for the info…

Thanks, Littleway, I’ll check your webpage for those directions in couple of weeks.

Littleway,

I went to your site over the weekend. Great site. It looks like the all CCD classes may be making them! Very cool. Thanks again.
