History of Scripture Readings in Liturgy

I am attending my first Catholic liturgy tomorrow ( other than observing a mass at a wedding 15 years ago ). I have attended a few Orthodox liturgies. Watching some Roman liturgies online I noticed that like the Orthodox they have the readings from scripture in the service.

Were these readings always there through the history of the liturgy, ie. thru the middle ages and earlier, just performed in latin ?

I assume they are defined readings from lectionary or somesuch so the Church as a whole reads through the same portions over some interval of time. Is that correct ?

Yes. The Mass has always included readings from Scripture. And many more prayers of the Mass are based on Scripture texts.

This has always been the case, but as you’ve guessed, these Scriptures were not necessarily in the vernacular tongue.
