History of Sunday Best?

Does anyone know the History of having to wear “your Sunday best” came from.

From what I can see in the past the only people that did were the royalty and that was just to look good.

Yet since I’ve reentered the faith that seems to be the most important thing on everyones mind. No one seems to be concerned about how the soul is dressed.

How far back are you talking? Probably those other than royalty didn’t have multiple sets of clothing. However, it is a common custom to try to be well-scrubbed and nicely-attired if you are going to petition the king, or a judicial court, or if you are visiting neighbors: you don’t want them to throw you out on account of your odor, or have them treat you poorly because they feel you have disrespected them.

So I don’t really think the idea of looking good for church is a recent invention. Whether it’s overemphasized is another issue.

We don’t call him Christ the King for nothing. When we go to Mass we are in His the presence Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity or in other words, in person.

I don’t know the answer to your question. All I know is that when I was a child, we had school clothes which consisted of a couple of outfits, and ONE DRESS for Church. There were 5 children and things were very tough so the wardrobe dept. was pretty scarce. We were raised to look your best for Church,(clean, neat & your best clothes) and I was not even a Catholic then so we didn’t believe that we would meet the King of Kings at Church. I guess it was a sense that you were going somewhere special and should look your best. Now that I am a Catholic, I KNOW how special the Mass is and want to look my best to be in the presence of My Lord & My God!
