History of the Church, Saints, etc

My lack of knowledge about my own church is quite depressing and I am very disappointed in myself for not trying to learn more about the Catholic Church. I would like to get some books, whether they be very long, or short, that delves into the history of the Catholic Church, its Popes, and Saints, etc. I know very little about the Popes before Pope John Paul II. I’ve watched documentaries about the church but a lot of them seemed to be biased or anti-Catholic.

I’m not looking for one specific book, I’m willing to spend money on several. I really want to learn about this great Church. 🙂

There are a number of books. Early church, I recommend “Fathers of the Church” by Jergens.
“Peter and the Keys” forget who it is by, but gives you Apostolic Succession of the Catholic Church.There are many good books on the life of the Saints. I do not know of one book that contains all this information. There are websites also. Salvation History.com, St Paul center for biblical studies. I know Dr. Scott Hahn runs those two.St. Joseph Communications and Catholic Resource Center use to have a lot of stuff on what your looking for.
