Do you mean the history of the Roman Rite in particular?

There are several books on the subject. There’s a downloadable book called THE MASS IN THE WESTERN RITES or something similar.

Or do you mean the development of the shape of the Eucharistic Sacrifice in general?

Again, there are scholarly books on the subject.

Mike Aquila (sp?) has an interesting book called “The Mass of the Early Christians”. Pope Benedict does give an historical overview of the Latin Rite in his book, “The Spirit of the Liturgy”.

spirit of the liturgy --great recommend!!! 🙂

Pope Benedict has two others books that deal specifically with the Mass:

Feast of Faith
A New Song for the Lord

These also have some history behind the Latin Rite. Another good one is the original Spirit of the Liturgy written by Msgr. Romano Guardini. Of course, japhy’s book, Praying the Mass, is also an excellent resource. He does factor in some of the history of the Latin Rite while he explains the new translations of the Mass. So, with his book, you will get a double whammy. 👍
