Does anyone know when, where, and with whom the rosary first started?

Is the rosary a private revelation? Is belief that the rosary is valid, a requirement
for being Catholic?

The rosary began in the Middle Ages. Serfs working in the fields could hear the psalms being prayed from the nearby monasteries and wanted a way to participate. It began as 150 Patre Nostras (Our Fathers) prayed while working. Rocks were used to count the Our Fathers. These were eventually strung on a rope. Over time, the Patre Nostras changed to the praying of the Hail Marys with which we are familiar. This is in keeping with scripture in which Mary says, “All generations shall call me blessed.”
St. Dominic, along with others, is credited with propagating the rosary and devotion to our Lady among the faithful.

I have a Marian Missal for daily Mass by Sylvester P. Juergens, SM Doctor of Sacred Theology. Published in 1950.
I will give you the entry for October 7, **"The Most Holy Rosary Of The B.V. Mary.

In its present form the Rosary was revealed by St. Dominic, the founder of the Order of Friars Preachers, in order to stem the flood of the Albigensian Heresy, then spreading far and wide throughout Europe. He propagated this form of prayer in obedience to a revelation received from the Blessed Virgin, to whom he had recourse for this purpose, about the year 1206, and to him was due the spread of a devotion which for many centuries has produced the most marvelous results in the Christian world. The decisive defeat of the Turks at the famous battle of Lepanto (A.D. 1571) and at Belgrade (A.D.1716) gave occasion both to the institution of this Feast and to its extension to the Universal Church."

If you wish to know more, study St. Dominic and the Albigensian Crusade. These events are not as often referenced in modern texts because many people would sooner forget than remember. However, you did ask about the history of the rosary.🙂

That is so awesome. The History and Traditions of the Church really invigorated my desicion to leave my other Non Denom Church 5 weeks ago and start RCIA. I even got my first Rosary so I am going to start to learn it this week.
