You think the attack on Pearl Harbour was a surprise? You think JFK was killed by one crazy dude named Lee Harvey Oswald? You think America was brought to its knees on 9-11 by 19 men carrying box cutters? You think a plane flew into the Pentagon and left NO plane wreckage? You think flight 93 crashed into the ground in PA and left NO wreckage? You think that Congress, relaxing the controls on investment banking, didn’t know that it would lead to a financial collapse and a forced BAIL OUT by the Fed? I pity you, I really do.
I’m sorry if I know too much for my own good, but I’m one of the last remnants of a public education system that was designed by Christians (yes, we once actually did read the BIBLE every morning in government-run Canadian Public Schools). But in another 30 years, when we’re all dead and gone, the puppet masters at the top of the power pyramid will cease to have any opposition. And then EVERYONE will be quite happy to pay money to watch the TV sitcoms and controlled news stories that will tell them what to think and when to think it.

I likely know far more about Pearl Harbor than you; it’s a hobby of mine, part of those 20,000 books. Including Stinnett, Costello, Clausen and Lee, Rusbridger and Nave, Tansill, Bartlett and Toland, inter alia, on the conspiracy side, the usual (Prange, et al, Lord, etc) on the standard side.
In fact, whacko conspiracy theories of many sorts, including your listed favorites, are one of my lesser hobbies. Folks who buy into that paranoia in one area tend to be attracted to others as well. It’s an interesting psychological effect.

On a forum like this, there is no way to know for sure that someone is telling you the truth about themselves. You can provide proof of the other things you claim, though, and it’s up to the one making the claim to prove it. If you don’t have the proof, either don’t make the claim or expect that the claim will be challenged.
There was a time when educated men collected books simply for the pleasure of having a “library”. They didn’t necessarily read most of what they acquired, acquiring many volumes in lots. Sets of books with nice bindings were favorites, regardless of the subject. So, a man with no interest in botany would have several volumes on the subject because they looked nice on the shelf.
I’m not saying that this is the case with the other poster–just giving you a little historical background on personal libraries. I would be surprised if this weren’t true today. Antique book collectors don’t read what they acquire, usually, either the old version they have or a newer printing.

Not really related to this particular subject, but related to respect - I wish Americans would realize that they are expected to respect the office of president, but aren’t required to respect the person holding the office. We are free to say that the person in office is a liar and to impeach the person. It’s been done before.

The Catholic Church was not apart of the problem of the Nazi movement. Pope Pius XII is getting a bad rap nowadays for other reasons.
What the Catholic Church did do, however, is help in establishing the poisonous world that led to the rise of the fascist Nazis.
The Nazis themselves (the higher ups) were certainly not Christians; they were a German pagans; but they used “techniques” [and I’m not talking about torture, I’m talking more about scholarly techniques] developed by the Church in the 18th and 19th centuries that made it easier for the Nazis to justify their arguments in a more persuasive manner to the general public.

First, the Nazi paganism is well documented.
Secondly, I would suggest reading of the throne and alter conservative movement in Continental Europe. Then I would suggest comparing this to the documents of the medieval world. The “ancien regime” so desired never existed; just as the Aryan past was a fabrication.

Very true. In my 11 years in the business of selling books, I spent 4 in the rare and OP world. I can recall people who needed books as decorations. Loved that sort, they bought by color of bindings a lot.
And no, I haven’t read all my books. There’s a small blue one I’ve been saving for a rainy day.
I added 40 books to the total, yesterday; a friend was liquidating his small holdings and gave me first pick. That 40 included about 8 duplicates, that will make fine gifts.
And if you suspect me of acquiring these things purely as wall coverings myself, try engaging me on one of my topics. Say, Chesterton, who I’ve collected and studied for over 45 years. Or parts of Tudor history, such as Hank’s Great Matter. Or parts of WWII that I concentrate on. Some folks here know me from that.
Books are my hobby because of what I find in them. Now if only I could get the library addition built to the house (I’m aiming at 1000 sq. feet) and stop storing 2/3s of them in attic, garage and rented storage. Before I die, I hope.

I suspect I am one of the oldest members, as suggested by my 45 years of collecting and studying Chesterton (and Belloc and Lewis and Tolkien and others of that ilk). But the hobby started 10 years earlier, when I was in the 6th grade, and bought Dekker’s DEFEAT AT SEA, GERMAN RAIDER “ATLANTIS” (author forgotten, packed away) Ruppelt’s THE REPORT ON UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECTS and Carr and Doyle’s collection of pastiches, THE EXPLOITS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES. In each of these areas I’ve continued to collect and read for those 55 years or so. And added many other areas along the way. And I have no expectation of living long enough to read all I own, but I’ll give it a shot. The others are ready reference, until then. I rarely use the internet for research (though I will, to jog my memory). I prefer books. On another RC board a question was raised recenty about a point related to Mary, Queen of Scots’ excecution at Fotheringhay. I found the point in two of my books on her, one of which I had read, one of which awaits reading. Owning both, I could reference both, by page, if needed. I like that.
In short, I love books. Buying books, reading books, collecting books, using books, living with books. And, like Scrooge McDuck and his money, I like tossing them up in the air and letting them hit me on the head (See " Only a Poor Old Man", UNCLE SCROOGE COMICS, 1952).
