Hello all,

Most people today believe that Pope Pius XII was allied with Hitler and supported the holocaust. Yet even Jewish leaders of the time period acknowledged Pius XIII as a righteous gentile, and British and US intelligence agencies knew that the Pope was against Hitler. New info has come out about Hitler’s plan to kidnap Pope Pius XII. Jewish newspapers have come out with information about the Vatican getting Jews out of Europe and to America.

Yet all of these lies started with a single stage play called “The Deputy.”

One single piece of popular media can distort reality very easily.

So why haven’t Catholics done a film that’s historically based and shows what Pius XII really went through? How he really got Jews out of Europe? How Hitler planned on kidnapping him? If you’ve been very wrongfully smeared in the media, why remain so silent; why not use the media to get the real story out?

And also, why has no one made a biographical film about Margaret Sanger and her eugenical desires at the foundation of Planned Parenthood? This is something most people have no clue about.

I think we have a lack of historical sources. I used to think that, too, before being on here. It’s probably just a common myth – trying to make a monster of a big giant (the Church), no matter how charitable that Church has been, no matter how many of our ancestors that Church has nurtured…

As it is said, the liberals own the media. Why would they allow for one of their heroes to be attacked, even in her death? Of course, we could do an independent film of some sort, like by a Catholic organization, but they would refuse to put it in the theaters and advertise it.

You’re right-- we’d have to fund it independently, but it’d be possible.

I definitely think the Hitler/Pope movie could be done independently and released theatrically. But again… funds. It’s something that really should be done though.

The media generally favors leftists. That is why they want you to believe stuff about Pope Pius XII being pro-Nazi. They also want you to hear about Catholic fascists instead of Catholics who were anti-fascists. You won’t hear much from the media about the crimes committed by leftist regimes like the Soviet Union or the racist views of Margaret Sanger though. This is the true leftist bias.

I believe the OP is referring to Catholic filmmaker not secular media.

There are have been a few movies already which touch on Pope Pius XII

Pius XII - Under the Roman Sky staring James Cromwell as Pope Pius XII was very well done and shows him during the Papacy.

God’s Mighty Servant is about a German Nun who works closely with the future Pope when he was the Nuncio to Germany, then the Vatican Secretary of State, and finally when he was Pope. It details the role the Nun had as being his right arm in the effort to hide Jews in Convents and Monasteries throughout Rome (if not throughout Italy).

You can purchase a monthly subscription to FORMED.org for $9.99 per month and watch them, plus tons of additional Catholic content (and can cancel at anytime).

Hello all,

I can’t speak on the first, but for the second, there’s a Kickstarter campaign by the American Life League going on right now to do a classroom unit on Sanger.

Besides the fact the media is very leftist, there is a lot of guilt felt by the church. In Germany, there were numerous Catholic priests who supported the Nazis and made public anti-semetic statements. Catholic priests in Wehrmacht units tuned a blind eye to the atrocities committed by the German military.

In Italy, Croatia, and Spain, the Catholic officials were supporters of right wing and fascist politicians who were opposed to the communists. Rightly or wrongly, these right wing politicians committed acts that the church did not oppose strongly enough and to leftists, the church became seen as being cooperative to these regimes.

Fairly or not, the church takes the blame in these situations and has preferred to avoid the attention for these things.

The Church was in a very delicate position during the Second World War and in the years leading up to it. Catholics who were in high positions in Germany both politically and the military, largely longed for a return of the monarchy. Hitler was seen early on as someone who could be tamed and turned into a figure who would restore the monarchy and restore order to Germany. Where they failed was in how the Hitler and the Nazis were able to manipulate circumstances to neutralize monarchical opposition and to galvanize nationalist sentiment to create a dictatorship with Hitler and the SS as the head of the government.

The Catholic church did not want to make matters worse for Catholics who opposed the Nazi regime. Indeed, there were several Nazis who wanted to turn on Catholics as soon as the Germans had won the war and taken care of the problem with the Jewish and other untermensch.

Beyond that, after the fall of the Italian forces in the Sicily campaign, the Germans controlled Rome. It was a delicate position for the papacy to be in. You have to resort to a kind of silent opposition once you are in the position of being occupied by a government that has shown that it will eliminate opposition. You can say the church was in survival mode itself.

As for Margaret Sanger, she is too revered on the left for anything critical to be made. It would ruin her name and threaten Planned Parenthood even more.

Yes. And at risk of repeating a previous post, there’s a well known movie, The Scarlet and the Black, which discusses the steps taken by Vatican priests to protect Jewish people with the knowledge and support of the Pope. He had to be careful to avoid precipitating Hitler’s vengeance against the Jews and people protecting them.
There are several scenes in the movie which portray the Pope and the tightrope he had to walk. It’s an excellent movie and fairly well known, although it came out in '83.

I don’t think that most people believe that. Certainly not most historians.

My father is a history buff and he believed that, until I sent him a copy of “Church of Spies.”
(I highly recommend that book). I have encountered this belief more than once. I found a website once where a person was declaiming Pope Pius XII; I commented on his editorial, refuting his claims with sourced material. It went back and forth until he finally just admitted (surprise) that he hated the Catholic church and would be glad when, as he put it, “we see the backside of it.”
The truth about Margaret Sanger? I think that even when people learn it they don’t want to believe it. I’ve read PP officials claiming that they don’t really have anything to do with her anymore, yet, their highest honor is still called the Margaret Sanger Award (bestowed on Hilary Clinton in 2009, voters!)

The TCM (Turner Classic Movies) channel plays it now and again. It’s a revelation regarding the Vatican’s underground work against the Nazi’s under Pope Pius XII’s reign . . . through which the Jews and other POW’s were wonderfully and richly blessed and helped on several fronts . . . and the movie is available for purchase in the TCM catalogue . . .

The Scarlet and the Black is a great movie, and the book it’s based on (“The Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican”) is good reading.

However… Monsignor Flanagan was actually not aware of most of the Vatican resistance activities going on, with both Jews and Allied soldiers. He was a flamboyant “mouthy” guy, and he was also an Irish nationalist. Since Ireland was not best buddies with the British and was officially a neutral country, Ireland made some nicey-nice with the Nazis, early on. So since Monsignor Flanagan was from a possibly pro-Nazi country and since he made so much noise about hating Nazis, a lot of the Italian and Vatican resistance people did not know what to think. They also did not trust him to be able to stay quiet and not be caught, or to stay quiet when he got caught. (Which he inevitably would be, or so they thought. And usually that was the case with flamboyant resistance guys, so they weren’t crazy or mean to think that.)

So he was running his own rescue and resistance organization, not knowing about all the thousands of groups that the Pope was masterminding. And so you see him in the movie and the book, complaining a lot about how the Vatican wasn’t doing enough!

Watching the movie becomes both sadder and funnier when you realize this…

Excellent idea! If people in today’s culture won’t listen to historical truth, or simply aren’t told it, perhaps they will get things straight by hearing it through the media/popular culture.

That’s good that there is something out there. Perhaps we need a new and updated version to get the public’s attention.

Could you please tell me about these Catholic anti-fascists?
There were plenty of Catholics that opposed the Nazi regime. Some even died in the Holocaust. St. Maximillian Kolbe died at Auschwitz. Are you pro-fascist?

Just because a person asks a question about something does not mean they are “pro” anything. They just are seeking information. Why would you ask such a question? Do you not see how it could be interpreted as an insult?

I asked that question because I have had conflict with that user before. I see how it may be interpreted as an insult, but I was not intending it that way.

I asked if there were any well-known Catholics who were strong anti-fascists; dying in the Holocaust does not make you an anti-fascist.

You should know that I am an anti-fascist as I oppose the current fascist regime and forces in Ukraine.
