Check out this recent article from Chris Ferarra regarding the recent news of a possible mass conversion of some large groups of Anglicans. It seems the two main obstacles standing in the way of their coming home is “ecumenism” and one particular (and peculiar) Cardinal:

All I Want For Christmas…

Peace in Christ,

one small correction to the article, the Catholic Herald piece was dated because I have the print edition sitting on my desk. It’s 29/11/2007.

I still think what Kasper’s saying is nuts. If it were a case of a group in communion with Canterbury (i.e. in the Anglican Communion) try to court that would be one thing; but it is not. Receiving the TAC en-masse won’t hurt anyone! 👍

This is not a rhetorical question:

Acknowledging that he is only a Cardinal with (obviously) no air of infallibility about him, why is Cardinal Kasper still allowed to be in his position with his beliefs that are clearly heterodox in matters relating to non-Catholics and the necessity of the Catholic Church for salvation? Why will the Holy Father not remove him?

Who knows. I miss Pius X, and Leo XIII

I could tell you what I suspect - but then I’d be labeled a conspiracy theory nutjob  .

You must be awfully old. 😉

I for one found Cardinal Kasper’s comments outrageous. What is even more insulting is that he thinks we ought to re-evaluate Leo XIII’s Infallible proclamation on Anglican Orders. He ought be sent packing just for that.

The good news is, Cardinal Kasper turns 75 in March, meaning that Pope Benedict could quietly retire Kasper, and thereby replace one of the most liberal cardinals in the Vatican without much fuss.

One can only hope!

I think he is right to be a bit skeptical. For hundreds of years they have denied transubstantiation and the authority of the Pope (sometimes venomously) and now because they are unhappy with their own Arch-bishop they want to change their beliefs and run to Rome? Even if the priest are on-board, can we know that all those parishoners are? I am very hopeful that we can bring in a big chunk of the seperated like this, but I think it requires some caution.

Well, to my best knowledge, the TAC believes in Transubstantiation. They are not simply some average Anglicans who, because the Anglican communion accepts gay clergy and woman ordination, want to go to Rome. They were a very conservative branch of Anglicanism even before that. In fact so traditionalist that they are basically Catholic in heir believes (except the Papacy and the understanding of the nature of the Church) - at least as far as I know. As far as liturgy goes, they are actually “higher” then average Catholic parish. But now that you mention this, my only concern is whether they already accept the Catholic Church as THE one Church founded by Jesus Christ and it’s teachings - including the one that says that their orders are basically invalid (and if they do, how do they deal with that?). I’m still however very exited by the idea that half a million Christians, who seem to have a very good sense of the liturgy, would convert to Catholicism.

Anyways, I’m deeply troubled about what I heard about Cardinal Walter Kasper. What he says is really not Catholic at all. He seems to be embracing the modernist believes and doesn’t seem to think that being Catholic is necessary for salvation.

This is unbelievable! And since the TAC isn’t in union with Canterbury anyway, it shouldn’t be a problem with “rapport” with Canterbury either. There were no TAC parishes on the West Coast when I converted from Episcopalianism or I’d have gone there right off. Perfect for an Anglo-Catholic! Even more perfect if they come home now. (Boy, it’d be great to have an Anglican-use parish around, but I know that wouldn’t change!) If their priests accept the orders issue, than I doubt that parishioners would have a problem. Could the problem be that liberals in the Vatican don’t want anymore traditional-leaning Catholics (esp. since B16 has opened use of TLM)?

I think you hit the nail on the head! I bet if it was a bunch of the gay and women priest wantin’, liberal variety of protestants than Cardinal Kasper would be “pushin’ them through” like there’s no tomorrow.
