Holding and lifting hands during Our Father

One parish by my office prays the Liturgy of the Hours (Evening Prayer) right before a 5:15 PM daily mass.

What I find is funny is noticing that only one person prays the Our Father with his hands outstretched out during the Liturgy of the Hours, but then many pray it during Mass with their hands outstretched.

Personally, if a person consistently prays the Our Father (inside and outside of mass) with the hands outstretched, then I’m fine with it. But if they only do it during Mass, then they really should not be.

If you tried that in NYC you’re lucky that nobody screamed for a cop, punched you or worse.

You don’t touch people in NYC unless they’re your spouse or something.

So don’t hold hands. Problem solved.

I honestly don’t know why this is such an issue with people. No one is forcing anyone else to hold hands.

That said, a lady at my parish is particularly bothered by hand holding and generally ignores anyone who tries to grab her’s. On those rare ocassions when she is confronted by an aggressive hand-holder who won’t take a hint, she makes a big production of “sneezing” into the hand the other person is trying to grab, then just as aggressively goes for the offered hand. I’ve only witnessed this two or three times, but the resulting facial expressions are pure gold.

Have any of you ever done the singing Our Father where it’s done like row row row your boat. (Our faaaather, our faaaather, who art in hea eh eh ven). That would be some swaying hand holding. Ugh.
 
If we’re going to rock the Our Father, then I vote for the Sister Janet Mead hit record version.

One of the local pastors actually gave a homily last year on how this song being constantly on the radio helped push him to be a priest. He was apparently trying to ignore the call to the priesthood but this song kept coming on the radio and reminding him. He wasn’t too happy about that at the time. “This…NUN singing everywhere…”

Hahaha, after the first couple notes I thought it was going to be to the tune of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.”
 
I think Archbishop Sample was referring to the orans posture (hands out, palms up), and not to holding hands during the OUr Father.

I understand (and have no problem with) her desire to not hold hands. And whoever the bozo is pushing the point is wrong. Her response is getting down to their level.
 
Kudos to her, as she wears an identifiable habit - contrary to so many Sisters I know whose only claim to thier vows may be a muted Cross worn with street clothes.

Cant say it rocks my boat, but looks like it is - what, 30+ years ago?
 
I agree. I’m sick of hearing people passively or directly badmouth kneeling for communion. It is a sign of humility not ‘disunity’.
 
Oh my gosh…I never saw firsthand how bad things were in the 70s. It’s good to see that things have generally gotten better.
 
I was a child when that song came out. I liked the song and loved hearing the Our Father on top 40 radio in the middle of all the pop songs about love. I couldn’t understand why many adults like my mom didn’t seem jazzed about it.

Not a big fan of Hideous Modern 70s Jesus statues though. I like them now for their nostalgia value but they always look to me like someone who simply couldn’t sculpt a human form.

And whatever those girls are doing holding hands in circles on the grass, no thanks to that.

Yes. But holding hands is a derivative of the Orans Posture.
 
I heard on the live show that Orans is to be done in private.

On another note–While visiting a friend in the hospital, EMUs brought in Communion. They wanted everyone in the room to hold hands during The Lord’s Prayer.
