I like these African cardinals. Don’t always agree with them but do like their charisma! The only one we had on par in Asia was Cardinal Sin. So miss him. Am awaiting is canonisation process to start as I can’t wait for a Blessed Sin.

This statement is not the same thing as proscribing that we have no position, a logical impossibility.
Not sure I’m following what you’re saying, but that document does state (for my diocese) that “therefore the extending or holding of hands by the faithful should not be performed.”

So it can be debated everywhere else if you want, but in my diocese it is not allowed.

The purpose of going to Mass together is (gasp!) communal worship. It is not some individualistic action.
(Gasp) The purpose is worship that is structured by the Church not by the individual. We are not to add our preferences. Now if you want to call it Germanic philosophy so be it but the facts are that the GIRM is a positive document that tells you what you may do not what you can’t. I can imagine the length if it weren’t. Holding hands came from an individualistic action. I see such contortions in order to hold hands with the person behind in the next pew. Holding hands puts the emphasis on the person next to you. The sign of peace becomes meaningless when you have just been holding hands. What is the purpose? The Church does not do anything without a purpose. Most people I know hold hands because they believe it is part of Mass. It is a meaningless gesture that is not worship.

I find holding hands during the Our Father to be distracting. Also, I would rather not add something to the liturgy. Just my two cents 🙂
