I have lived in three diocese and have attended many parishes and in every single one 90% hold hands, most across the isle. There are seven parishes in my city and every single one of them has a big chain of human hands across america every Mass. It was that way at my Catholic high school, my Catholic College, My wifes Catholic college, the diocese we lived in 10 years ago, and now. Guess where is wasn’t prevalent? in Italy.🤷
I’m really sorry about that… yes, I am perfectly willing to admit that I have been very lucky parish wise growing up, and attended a Catholic College that takes its Catholic identity very seriously. Thats not to say I haven’t also had my share of unorthodox experiences, interestingly enough, most of which were in Europe. 🤷 It really depends on where you are, but I honestly believe that the younger generations are getting it right and will bring about a new renewal of the church. There are many good Catholic schools and orders in the States and elsewhere that work with the young and encourage them to become serious about their faith and to care about the actual teachings, practices, and traditions of the church whether through the EF or OF. It can be disheartening to witness liturgical abuses, but as God has said, the gates of hell shall not prevail against the Church.

So…if I get you right…a Bishop is supposed to personnally stop the laity from holding hands during the Our Father? Because that is the most pressing problem facing the Church?
The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones. Luke 16:10

AH Excuse me Y’all, But, they way Catholic services are DONE in The Field (ie )Combat for you Non-Military folks ) would probably would Really flipped out, That’s way This (966 AD )Polish ,Catholic, Has Bailed on you folks.

In my church, we hold hands then the hands are raised at the last words (is this the oran position?) and we gently squeeze and let go of the hands. We then give the sign of peace to those around us.

I have been in churches where they actually hold hands with the people behind them, across the aisle, or walk across the aisle to give the sign of peace. And the greetings continue way too long. I find this contrived.

Unless the person makes a move toward me to hold hands, I stay passive. I make an effort to shake the hands of those near me especially those whom I know are alone. I want them to be acknowledged and this might be the only human touch they receive all week.

What I do find odd is that after all this when you see some people outside of church, they blow right past.

Ahhhhhh the squeeze!!!:eek: How in the world did that start? By some junior high girl who wanted a boy to ask her to a dance?

Holding hands during the Our Father is dishonest? And a Bishop is supposed to personally stop all this?

Seriously people…you have Catholics that leave early, don’t have reverence for the Eucharist, go to Mass like its a time card…punch in and punch out. Our religious freedom is being eroded right and left…is hand holding REALLY where we want to hang our hat? So much so that we get after Bishops for not PERSONALLY stopping it?

Does this bother anyone else? I mostly just let it go but when a Priest tells the congregation to hold hands during the Our Father it really just peeves me. This happened at a funeral at another church. Not only did the Priest tell everyone to hold hands, he finished the Our Father with …and thine is the kingdom and the …etc.
I Don’t like it, I don’t do it.
Prayer is something that should be kept reverential and respectful.
Just my humble opinion.
The priest should definately NOT be telling the congregation to do so,

Another saying hits it better take care of the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves. What I am trying to point out is that there is no such thing as a small matter. You mention reverence for the Eucharist. The Liturgy is not haphazard. Everything is done for a reason. We have no right to introduce a novel practice. If the small things are taken care of the big ones will fall into place.

Ditto.👍

I dont think anyone is talking of the way Mass is carried out in the field. That is an extraordinary situation and there will be some extraordinary things. What we are talking about is regular Mass, at a parish, governed by rules for 2000 years.

Ya…cause that has worked so well so far. What about seeing the forest for the trees?

Personally I think if the priest doesn’t ask for it (which he shouldnt) and that is all you have to worry about…then you’ve got it good. Personnally all the talk condemning Bishops for not personnally being there to make sure that we don’t hold hands, scratch our noses etc…then I file it under “stop complaining and get a life:rolleyes:

👍 **Exactly. I was thinking that it is usually the small things that develop into bigger things. As King Solomon pointed out, it is the little foxes that spoil the vine.

*Catch us the little foxes that destroy the vines: Song of Solomon 2:15. ***

In other words, the seeming “little things.”

What…we are Protestants now and pulling out little bible verses and making a whole point of them? What about the one where you are suppose to pluck your eye out if it causes you to sin?

**No, that is just it. We are not protestants. The Bible is a Catholic book.

Here is the commentary on that verse from Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible Online:

*Catch us the little foxes: Christ commands his pastors to catch false teachers, by holding forth their fallacy and erroneous doctrine, which like foxes would bite and destroy the vines. ***

Maybe it is not complaining, maybe it is about caring for God’s house and love of the mass and not wanting to ignore something that could lead to further disruptions at mass..
And maybe it is being too easily distracted. Just because people hold hands during the Our Father OR they don’t think it is the end of the world DOES NOT mean that we don’t love the Mass! I resent that you make that implication…

The laity holding hands…with no direction from the priest is NOT false teaching! And you still did not answer my question about plucking your eyes out…

Let me first state, I did not mean to imply that those who hold hands don’t love the mass, I was meaning that those who are speaking right now about the issue are doing it out of love of the mass, in answer to your comment that they are complaining and don’t have a life.

As far as the plucking your eyes out, as you said we are not protestants. We look for direction from the Church in our interpretation of scripture. Again from the same source as before Douay Rheims Catholic Bible Online:

And if thy eye scandalize thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee. It is better for thee having one eye to enter into life, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire Matthew 18:9

Commentary: 6] Shall scandalize: That is, shall put a stumblingblock in their way, and cause them to fall into sin.

In otherwords, talking about things that cause us to sin. We are to rid ourselves of the stumbling blocks that cause us to sin.

You are also right about it not being false “teaching.” The reason I quoted the verse from Solomon and showed the commentary was to show that like most problems they start small and grow. When little things are allowed they tend to grow into big things. That is pretty understandable in most situations, not just mass. Just ask any parent.

God bless. 🙂

Maybe this will help.

The priest is the one offering the mass, to God.

All of the audience-participation introduced since the 60’s is actually inessential. You don’t need a congregation to say Mass, either. It’s not about the ‘Community’.

This is the problem: they’ve tried to make it populist and the operation doesn’t suit that. It’s not that sort of ritual. So it jars.
