Holding Hands During the Our Father

I think that we have all sidestracked from the OP. The bottom line is that the parents are the first teachers of the Faith to their children. If the OP wishes not to have her children hold hands during the Pater Noster, she is certainly within her rights.

The bottom line is that is the parent’s call.

Amen Benedictgal! All I was looking for was some guidance on how to teach my children to pray in a manner that is more beneficial for their spiritual life and relationship with God. Right now what’s happening is that the hand holding includes swinging arms, squeezing hands a bit too tight, etc. Too distracting and doesn’t keep them focused on praying the Our Father to their Father in heaven.

I don’t care what other’s do. I have to do what’s right for my children and their formation. I didn’t mean for this to turn into a 6 page discussion! I hope everyone who vented feels better.

If we are to avoid devision at all costs, what types of innovation are we to endure in the name of conformity?

And that is why I believe in being respectful for those to whom even holding hands is as wild as removing shirts and dancing in the aisles. We all have different points at which unity is not worth it. I think the important thing is to keep the principle above in mind. If you do not hold hands and are the only one, then it would be best to do so humbly and as low key as possible. I have read some that mark their decisions to be the only one doing this or that like some red badge of courage. That is decidedly not the correct attitude the faithful should have during Mass.
