We live far away from our extended families. I have to work in thanksgiving and the days surrounding it. My husband’s family invited him
And our son… I wouldn’t be able to make the trip. We just moved to this new state and I’d probably end up alone for the holiday…(aside from work).

Should I encourage them to go be with the big family… Without me? I don’t want to be selfish…

Make sure that your husband and son actually want to go without you before you broadcast a willingness to be alone on Thanksgiving to anyone outside the three of you. It is OK if your husband is longing to see his family for the Thanksgiving holiday–thus freeing you up to visit your relatives over Christmas, after all–but your husband and son may not relish the idea of a holiday without you, not one bit. They may like the idea of watching the football game together alone until you get home on Thanksgiving very much, too. In some families, the choice between football in peace and a simple meal with Mom late in the day or the usual “banter” (or scenes) of a family holiday spent in a town other than the one that houses one’s own bed is a very easy choice, but not a choice you’d tell the matriarch or patriarch. Loyalty is a good trump card to be able to have, so let your husband play it if he insists!

If they really want to go, then sure, let them go. In that case, were I you, I would make a reservation tomorrow at a good place for Thanksgiving, and make it your business to find yourself someone else who has nowhere else to go. After a long day at work, you really don’t want to be roasting a stuffed game hen to eat alone at home or hosting a gathering at your house alone, without your husband and son there to help. There have to be other people working on Thanksgiving who would like to have someone to have a special meal with. I will bet you will either a) find someone or b) get invited to chuck the restaurant and join someone. (Be sure to mention your capacity to make pies, if you possess that ability! :))

What if you don’t find someone? Do your best. You aren’t, after all, one of those souls who really don’t have someone, or who are missing family thanksgiving because you’re stuck in a hospital on a diet that doesn’t allow turkey and dressing. You can do this! 👍

How would you actually feel if they went without you? If you would feel bad, abandoned and lonely, *tell them. *Don’t be a martyr!!! Or like those chipmunks on the cartoons who couldn’t get theough a doorway because each wanted the other to go first!

If you would be fine without them, tell them that.

You three are a family, and spending TG with just the three of you, or having some people over who are also not going out of town, would be fine.

OTOH, their going without you and your being totally ok with that is also fine.

What would not be fine is their going off thinking you’d be fine and your being alone and feeling bad about it.

Ahhh . . . . a rather common and oh so very difficult situation in this age of moving away from the town in which your parents live. Basically, how do we “do” holidays? Do we visit my family, or do we visit his family?

My experience has been this: Spend the holidays with the family you created (this means your spouse and your children). Invite relatives to come visit you if at all possible. Go visit the relatives/in-laws/out-laws (😉 at some other time of the year; like during the summer when school is out.

Just my 2 cents! 🙂

I would first talk to my husband and son and see what they would like to do. Have they voiced their desire?

I would never leave my wife alone on a Holiday. Never. Not a chance in hades!

But that is just me, My immediate family and marriage is my priority. And I pray to God every day to help me demonstrate that in any way I can.

We also live far away from immediate family. We are going" home" for thanksgiving and But if my wife could not go, we would have a nice turkey dinner in our home with each other.

I guess what I am saying is that this would not even be a question for us. My wife would not even offer and I would actually be a tad offended if she did. She is the one I left my family for to cleave to.

Besides, I can watch football anywhere!

If my husband really wanted to visit his family, and I had to work anyway, I’d be OK with him going.

But, you’re not me or anyone else here. So, do what you and your spouse think best.

This. Some of us have had to go through Thanksgiving away from our families when we were younger, and did not mind it. We can’t say how the OP will feel about it. If she does mind it, that is OK! If she knows she’ll feel in the dumps to have to work on Thanksgiving and then come home to an empty house, then it is not selfish for her to advocate for her immediate family to stay together, since it is possible.

We’ve lived about 1500 miles from “home” for virtually all of our married lives (39 years.) Because of the nature of my husband’s work, taking time off around Thanksgiving was never an option, and traveling with young children over Christmas (with the attendant gifts, etc.) was just too difficult. Therefore, we spent most holidays with “just” our immediate family. While I always felt bad that we missed virtually all big family celebrations, the thought of going “home” over a major holiday and leaving my husband behind never once occurred to me - and my parents would have been upset if I had!

I’m with you on this one.

I wouldn’t mind in the least being alone for Thanksgiving. I’d order some good food and relish the relative quiet while watching movies on the couch. So if it were me, yes, I’d encourage them to go. If it were Christmas? Probably not.

Is it going to cause you a financial strain or an unwanted opportunity for overspending if they go? You don’t need that added stress.

I can’t add much to what has already been said other than to note that when you move away from extended family the way you handle holidays that first year can set the tone for the future.

My parents moved across the country shortly before I was born so we seldom saw family on the holidays. It was the same with most of the families we knew back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Our families happily created our own nuclear family traditions. My own children grew up surrounded by extended family and have frequently spent holidays with them but in both cases holidays were usually centered around home.

As others have mentioned there are no absolute right or wrong answers that should be imposed on your family. You and your husband should decide what works for your nuclear family this particular Thanksgiving.

But I recommend frequently celebrating holidays in your own home .
