A Martinez, a Hollywood actor of Hispanic and Native American heritage who posts on Facebook under the name “A Bone Martinez,” claims to have had something disturbing happen to him a short time ago. He has posted the following on his Facebook timeline:
Went to my gym today, as I do five times a week when I’m home, and was surprised by the manager in the midst of my tricep sets. He asked me to stop by and see him on the way out. I asked why.
He said that another member had singled me out for having harassed him. That this other member had told him that I’d looked at him, and then purposefully drawn my thumb across my neck. And that such behavior would not be tolerated – that it would cause me to lose my membership.
I was sufficiently stunned to remain silent for a moment, then said, “That’s a lie. Who said that?” He looked at me for a beat, then replied, “Well, maybe he mistook you for someone else.”
“Where is he?” I asked, “I want to talk to him.” “Well, that’s not possible. But we have surveillance cameras, and we’ll look at the tapes and see who’s telling the truth.” “He’s lying,” I said, “and he should be willing to look me in the eyes.” “Well, that’s not going to happen, but we will monitor the situation.” “All right,” I replied. “But I’m asking you to tell him what I said – that I am requesting to talk with him – whoever he is – face to face.” “That’s against company policy,” he said, “but please let me know if you have any problems.”
He walked away. My eyes started scanning the room. Over and over again.
For those among us who wonder why so many people have taken to the streets, I offer this cowardly little episode as an example of what’s been unleashed. I’ve been going to this gym for more than five years; practice good manners as a default; and someone now is trying to have me excluded.
Please think about this, when you’re trying to make your own peace with the scared and deeply troubled hearts of Non-White America.
What do people here on CAF think?

This is the first I have heard of this incident. Guess we will have to see what the gym
cameras show

Maybe I missed something, but I did not read in the article that the individual making the complaint about Mr. Martinez was white. Are we just to assume that is the case? If so, that is unfortunate, as well.

He is presuming that it is because of his race - yet nothing in what was said indicates that at all …

This could have been an in inadvertent gesture and look that someone was intimidated by and should not have been …

It could be a mistaken identity - someone else made the gesture …

We don’t know the race of the person making the complaint - they could be African American, Asian, Hispanic or White …

Even if the person is White - the complaint may not have anything to do with race…

And it could have not one thing to do with the election …

🤷

What made you bring up race?

Probably this:

“Please think about this, when you’re trying to make your own peace with the scared and deeply troubled hearts of Non-White America.”
Yes - this … it was the gentleman complaining that made it about race

Pay. So A Martinez is making this a race issue…

Did he know what the race was of the person making the complaint?

“making it a race issue”

Are you aware of what is going on all over the country? Incidents caught on audio and video, even more that are reported on social media*, that demonstrate that racists are coming out of the woodwork and are very comfortable using threats and manipulation (as in the example in the OP). There won’t be any video but the harm has been done. Does A Martinez feel safe in a place he’s been working out in for years? Are there cameras in the shower area/ locker room? I’m guessing not; that would be nuts. The accuser just has to add an incident there and Mr. Martinez loses his membership. Can you see what else he stands to lose?

*People are quick to dismiss reports of threats and intimidation, many using Trump’s words or his name, demonstrating Trump and his rhetoric created this climate. He’s denounced people protesting him being elected (“Not fair” like he’s a 5 y.o.) but has not denounced any of these incidents.

I’m aware of some hoaxes. Has anything been proven? People often seem to forget that there are 330,000,000 Americans. 60,000,000 of them voted for Trump. A half dozen incidents would not represent a significant trend.

I live in the south where supposedly most white Americans are racists if you listen to people talk. My husband and I are not white. Our kids are Mexican and Indian mixed. We have had absolutely no problems either before or after the election. Most of our close friends are Mexican (like my husband). None of our friends have had problems either. No one I know is panicking over immigration issues or hate crimes. I have no doubt that most of the problems are occurring in major population areas due to groups of people listening to “news reports” that create drama and make people anxious over problems not really there.

I am confused. The writer assumes that the person making the complaint is white and lying in order to exclude the writer from the gym. Does this make sense?

What is more likely to have happened is that a mistake occurred; either the person complaining misunderstood something the writer did or mistook the writer for the person who actually did it.

It seems like the writer, making 3 assumptions, is now making his own accusations against someone who is simply mistaken or who might have a legitimate complaint.

Not everyone is racist. However, those that are, are coming out of the woodwork - and it’s certain they voted for the President-elect. Whatever kept them underground during the Obama years - maybe fear, maybe intimidation, maybe not wanting to be seen as ignorant - it’s not continuing under the new President, unless he makes it clear that he will not tolerate it and will prosecute any semblance of harassment (in fact, that he’d make an example out of those that even come close)… Appointing Bannon though, wasn’t a positive sign according to some Jewish groups and Civil Rights groups - I hope they are wrong.

I understand that some posters on CAF are having a hard time believing that white supremacists are crawling out of their caves and into the sunlight, but it is indeed the case. If you Google “Breitbart” and racism or anti-Semitism and anti-woman you will be shocked at what you read. I’m so sad that the President-elect just appointed a former Breitbart leader to be part of his team in the White House. The appointment of Prebus as chief off staff was a solid pick, Bannon, not so much…

Our country has been racially divided for several years prior to Donald Trump and the election. His rhetoric has certainly made things worse, no question. Until we all decide to live as Christ taught us, with love and charity, nothing will change.

Are you saying that everyone that voted for Trump is a racist? Or the only racists in the country are the ones that voted for Trump??

my African American ex neighbor who is a professional woman accused me this morning of being a racist because I voted for Trump. I was very insulted and shocked that someone I considered intelligent and educated could be so small minded. I don’t understand people.

Racial tension is a result of dividing people into groups and setting them in opposition to each other…

This is not as much about the election as it is about BLM movement that has targeted police …also near the election …

It has not helped that there has been do.e very high profile publicized crimes committed by illegal aliens …

Human nature is what it is …when people are oppressed and demonixed due to race or other differences people will push back along those same identification themes …

Thus I think it is not unthinkable that Whites, Blacks and Hispanics are acting out …and they are …

But let’s not place all the blame on Trump or his supporters …it was the Democrats that discussed taco bowl strategies and using Latinos …needy Latinos to boot …the left has wondered and insulted the African American population … basically keeping the on the planation with government welfare and saying they are unable to even show ID at polling places.

Democrats are closet racists and bigots …Blacks, Asians and Hispanics also have racist members…

Let’s stop categorizing people by ethnicity, race and creed …I do not categorize my friends as my Hispanic friends (I have many) nor African American (again I have many) nor Irish, Indian, Tanzanian, South African, Taiwanese, Native American …and more …they are just my friends …

When I get upset with a person …I am upset with them …their color is not the reason …
