Bishop Thomas Tobin (Providence R.I.) shares concern, as reported in Catholic News, about “boisterous atmosphere, talking before Mass”…and how he has witnessed complete lack of reverence in the way people dress. HIs Excellency recalls his concerns reaching it’s pinnacle while administering Holy Communion, to a confirmation sponsor who dropped the Sacred Host he had placed in her hand and she looked at him and giggled saying “I guess I’ll need another one of those” like she had jus lost her favorite snack cracker. Question: has not the change in the Liturgy, hand holding, applauding, anouncing birthdays, etc etc lent itself to a lowering the bar, so to speak regarding what is expected…when less is expected will not less be presented ? Is it no wonder that there is a complete lack of reverence for the Eucharist. St. Francis of Assisi writes to his Friars…“Let the entire man be seized with fear, let the whole world tremble; let Heaven exult when Christ, the Son of the Living God, is on the altar in the hands of the Priest. Oh humble sublimity O sublime humility. That the Lord of the universe, God and Son of God so humbles himself that for our salvation he hides himself under a morsel of bread”
