Hi,
I am an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at an assisted living facility. Yesterday, I noticed that they added to the “Catholic List for Holy Communion” a person who both the Chaplain and I know is a Lutheran. This person requested a few months ago to receive but since the person’s name was not on my “Catholic List” I asked her if she was Catholic. The response was “no, my husband was and I received in his Church.” (He died sometime ago). I found out this person was a very happy Lutheran and did not wish to join the Catholic faith. But would like to receive Communion. I informed the staff and have not heard anything since then until yesterday.
Based on some documents that I have reviewed such as, Canon Law, Redemptionis Sacramentum, Ecclesia de Eucharistia, etc the only way that this person could receive is with dispensation from the Bishop or near death. Maybe the Chaplin has received this but I have not been informed. But I want to be prepared in case this is a situation of “being nice” and I have the proper response.
I am perplexed since their is a Protestant Pastor who does visit the institution but I am uncertain if they asked him about this request.
Any help with documents that I can use to explain would be most helpful.
