I’ll ask the question, then give the circumstances:
Does the Church allow a baptized Catholic to regularly receive Holy Communion without having made their first Confession?
Situation:
My brother is 21 years old with autism. He’s been receiving Holy Communion for years now, but has not made a Confession. While he doesn’t understand the concept of “sin” he does know when he does things wrong/bad, and he’ll often apologize on his own when he messes up. My mother and his caregiver think that because he’s autistic and doesn’t understand the sacrament, he doesn’t need Confession (yet they insist on Holy Communion
).
I had been told that, outside the danger of death, it is absolutely not permitted. The priest that did his first Communion agrees with my mom and the caregiver that it isn’t necessary (FYI: he’s a bit on the liberal side) however, he is not opposed to it either (at least he wasn’t when my mom brought it up with him a few years ago).
So again, does the Church allow a baptized Catholic to regularly receive Holy Communion without having made their first Confession? If so, would you please provide the document for this allowance? Thank you and God Bless.
