Holy Day mortal sin?

If you miss Mass on a Holy Day of Obligation is it a mortal sin you’d need to confess before receiving Communion in the future? One priest told me it was, and another said we are obligated to make an effort to attend on a Holy Day but that’s it. I tend to think the Catechism teaches that Holy Days are REQUIRED attendance. Any help?

Holy Days are just like Sundays. If you are ill, doing necessary work (which is much more likely on a Holy Day than a Sunday), or have other unavoidable things like childcare issues that prevent you going, then it is not a sin to miss Mass. If you can go and choose not to, then it’s a mortal sin indeed.
 
I thought you had to go to Confession to receive Absolution if you miss Mass? Is this not so?
 
Yes you must go to confession before you recieve communion if you intentionally miss Mass. If have a valid reason ie you are very sick then there is no need to confess that.

They are required attendance, so you are to make it there under reasonable circumstances or you sin mortally.

As putting God first is the most important thing we should do, to do otherwise is to deny God. Now if I am sick, disabled, my car breaks down or something like that, it is a reasonable excuse.
Going to Pappy’s Bar for a couple of pints of ale is not a good excuse and is putting pleasure above God, so yes it is a sin that must be confessed, as it is a willful rejection and negation of the place of God in our lives.

If you forget that it is a Holy Day of Obligation or you don’t know and your pastor doesn’t inform you it is on him. You should seek to be informed though and only God knows your heart and He knows if you willfuly reject Him or it is just a mistake\ignorance.

If you know ahead of time that you won’t be able to attend (for a reason other than illness), you should get a dispensation from your pastor.

Certainly it’s a good idea to do this if you ever think beforehand that you won’t be able to make it to Mass on a Saturdy night/Sunday or HDO.
