Got a couple of questions:
  1. If I attended a Eucharistic service this morning, does that count toward my obligation?
  2. If not, would I be able to receive again at Mass tonight?
Thanks.

Any Mass you attend on August 15th, at any time during the day, would meet your obligation.

So yes, this morning your obligation would have been met and there would be no need to go to Mass again this evening.

Often evening Masses on Holy Days of Obligation are there for the convenience of those who work during the day and would not otherwise be able to attend Mass, but it is not necessary to go to that particular Mass. Any Mass during the day would satisfy your obligation, even if it were a funeral Mass (and thus not with the readings for the Assumption).

If you did want to go again in the evening you would be able to receive communion. You may receive a second time during the day as long as the second time is within the context of a Mass.

Thanks. Good to know about receiving twice.

But just to be clear, the Eucharistic morning service was not Mass. It was a few prayers, then communion and final blessing. No Gospel readings. Would that count?

In what sense are you using the term “Eucharistic service”? Since you use it in the first question and “Mass” in the second question, I have to take it to mean that the first instance was not a Mass/celebration of the Eucharist.

If the first reference is to a service led by a Deacon or Extraordinary Minister for the benefit of those who are confined in a nursing home, for example, then it would not satisfy the obligation and one who was able to be present for Mass should go and, as OraLabora says, could receive Communion.

The obligation is to attend Mass. So, no that would not fulfill the obligation.

  1. No. I’ve been told that in some rural dioceses on a Sunday this may be all that some parishioners are able to get for hundreds of miles with the shortage of priests. If, however, a Mass is available to you then you would still need to attend to fulfill your obligation.
  2. Yes. You may receive twice in one day if the second time is at Mass.
