Alright guys/gals, I think my post about “Changing up the Catholic Religion” kinda went overboard, and I apologize for that. I was just looking for ways to change up, or maybe make it a little more challenging to complete your Confirmation. Whether it be a test, a retreat, etc.

Now, what I want to talk about is our Holy Day of Obligation. I find alot of people go to church for a 30 minute mass and that’s it. They think, just because they went to church, their obligation is fulfilled. Isn’t it a Holy Day of Obligation? Last time I checked, it wasn’t a Holy 30 minutes of Obligation. I don’t believe you should be in church all day, but longer than 30 minutes(which is where I was going in my first post). One thing I dislike is TV on Sunday. I honestly believe that it should be a sin(venial) if you watch TV on Sunday, unless it was a religious channel or film. It should also be a sin to work at your place of employment on Sunday if it wasn’t necessary. If it is necessary, you need to talk to a Priest before working. Also, shopping, eating out, gambling, drinking, getting online(unless for religious/medical reasons) should all be considered sin upon during your Holy Day. There’s plenty of other things to do.

These are great ideas, for YOU. If YOU want to grow your faith that way, great.

But to put your beliefs or your ideas as what the Church should teach is wrong. I follow the teachings of the Catholic Church, not some joe on an internet forum.

Exactly. Some of us may be called to sacrifice more to draw closer to God, but one can’t decide what others should do or not do or what is sinful or not sinful when there are no Church teachings that say otherwise.

I understand, but do you think someone that attends a 30 minute mass every Sunday and does nothing else is fulfilling his/her obligation?

Are you using these forums to create your catechism?

Great quotes from the Catechism:
2192
“Sunday . . . is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the universal Church” (CIC, can. 1246 § 1). “On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass” (CIC, can. 1247).
2193
“On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound . . . to abstain from those labors and business concerns which impede the worship to be rendered to God, the joy which is proper to the Lord’s Day, or the proper relaxation of mind and body” (CIC, can. 1247).
2194
The institution of Sunday helps all “to be allowed sufficient rest and leisure to cultivate their familial, cultural, social, and religious lives” (GS 67 § 3).
2195
Every Christian should avoid making unnecessary demands on others that would hinder them from observing the Lord’s Day.

Who is this supposed person and what are you doing to bring him more into the faith??

It’s true we ought to set the entire day aside for God. It should be treated as a sacred day of rest and joy, much like Sunday.

Does Baltimore Ravens Football count as a religious activity? (Don’t they have something to do with the Baltimore Catechism?)

To my mind it does. I know my Pastor watches both Lions and Red Wings games on Sunday.

The day is about resting as well. It’s about being able to emulate God while relaxing, resting, and growing closer. You must remember that it was given for Man, so that man could get the rest he needed from a week of work while also being like God. God didn’t need to rest. He didn’t do it because he was tired. He did it because WE get tired. It’s ok to watch things on TV, to sit back and enjoy your family, have a picnic etc.

The day is about worship AND rest. So yes, worship God communally. Yes watch things that edify and uplift. Watch a football game and relax. But above all, do it in a way that allows you to grow closer to God.

Quiet possibly. It depends on how they are disposed while doing nothing else.

The key point is that none of us can impose further conditions on others beyond what the Church does.

You’ve received excellent answers so far. One other thing to consider is that people can only do what is available to them. Here, while a normal daily Mass may only be 30 minutes long. On HDO, there are Masses with music, etc more like a Sunday Mass. However, that might not be the case everywhere. If a person goes to Mass and recognizes the day, there is no obligation for him to search out the longest possible Mass.

This is all just your opinion. If you don’t want to do those things, fine. I’m a stay at home mom of 4 kids…just how do I get out of working on Sunday? Am I suppose to go talk to the priest before I “work” too?

I understand, but do you think someone that attends a 30 minute mass every Sunday and does nothing else is fulfilling his/her obligation?
This is dangerous spiritual territory, I’d think. What “fulfills the obligation” (and frankly, that more accurately ought read “brings us closer to God”) is, for Catholics a) laid out in pretty painstaking detail in the official written catechism and b) best personally interpreted by the faithful under the guidance of and direction by their spiritual father/pastor/confessor/spiritual director.

For the second time today, I find myself encouraging someone to be concerned first about his own sanctification, rather than comparing to other persons and finding oneself “superior”.

I attend a 30-minute Mass every day, but Mass is longer on Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation. So you think a 30 minute Mass isn’t long enough? Are you holier than the Catholic Church founded by Christ for the salvation of the world? You should write your suggestions to the Pope :p.
