I can only guess he was being facetious, or you are misreporting the exchange?

As near as I can tell, though the Canadian Catholics are not obliged to assist at Mass, 15-Aug remains the Feast (Solemnity) of the Assumption?

bold is mine

Your are correct sir, he had a very broad smile on his face at the time. It is very difficult to portray the correct tone from a keyboard.
I also stated that after Mass we had a very pleasant exchange.
The Assumption is not a Holy Day of Obligation in Canada, more like a Holy Day of Opportunity.

the general rule is that I should be going to mass for all those days listed in canon law as universal, regardless of whather my country or the one I’m visiting observes them? that’s what I’m a bit confused about
If they are exempted in the country your in - one is thus not bound to observe that Holy day. So my mother in law is living with us right now - so any of those Universal Holy Days that are not in effect here - she does not need to observe that day - even though it is observed in her country - why? For she is here. ( as noted in Canon 12.2).

(Now lets say I live in Europe and it is in effect where I live- and in the afternoon I just take a quick trip - for say an hour in the afternoon -across the border to where it is exempt – normally I would need to observe the Holy Day :))
