Could someone please explain (forgive me if the answer is obvious) why my Baronius Press Missal has two Masses for tomorrow, the First Sunday after the Epiphany:
- Feast of the Holy Family (Introit: Exsultat gadio pater Justi)
and
- First Sunday after the Epiphany (Introit: In excelso throno).
I thought tomorrow was, in the old calendar, the Feast of the Holy Family? …
The Holy Family was inserted in the Universal Calendar by Benedict XV in 1921, when it was fixed for the Sunday within the Octave of Epiphany** (i.e. First Sunday after Epiphany). Prior to 1921 the Mass provided for this Sunday was “In excelso throno”.
After this change was made, a new rubric was inserted so that the “old” Mass would still be used. It ordered that the Mass “In excelso throno” was to be said on the next “feria” (non-feast day) of the Octave of Epiphany. If however, the Sunday after Epiphany fell on January 13th, then the Mass “In excelso” was to be said on January 19th.
In 1956, the Octave of Epiphany was abolished. Thus, the rubric was replaced by another in the 1962 missal.
According to this rubric:
From Epiphany until the Holy Family, the Mass to be used on feriae (non-feast days) is the Mass of the Epiphany, "Ecce advenit ".
From the Holy Family to the Commemoration of the Baptism OLJC, the Mass to be used is the First Sunday after Epiphany “In excelso throno”.
So on Sunday, the Mass used will be “Exsultat gaudio pater Iusti” for the Holy Family. On Monday, it will be “In excelso throno” from the First Sunday of Epiphany. On Tuesday, it will be “Ecce Advenit” for the Commemoration of the Baptism OLJC
(the Baptism uses the same Mass as Epiphany, but with a different Collect, Secret, Postcommunion and Gospel)
** Epiphany+ 7 days i.e. January 6 to January 13
