My son asked me a question yesterday which stumped me as I had never considered it before.

He asked me Ijust out of interest) how was it there had only been 200 + popes in 2,000 years of the church? He did not understand the maths.

I am asking this in genuine ignorance and a lot of respect and would be very interested to give him a good answer.

There have been, unless I’m mistaken, 265 popes from the time of St. Peter.

Since we’re only 2015 years or so since the time of Christ, that would allow for not quite 10 years per reign.

Having read this, can anyone tell me what an Anti Pope is? Is this something bad? Anti means ;‘against’ Also why did one of these popes end up in Aix someone told me.-Was he the ‘anti pope?’🤷
I have never gone into this before! Have copied the names of the popes and dates for my son. Bless you, Evelyn x

’Anti’ doesn’t mean evil or ‘against’; it simply means that the person sitting in the chair of Peter is not a legitimately elected pope. Does it mean that he is or was an unholy man? Absolutely not. There was a time in Catholic papal history where there were three popes claiming the chair of Peter. When the cardinals finally figured it out after a century, they elected one who they all agreed would be the legitimate bishop of Rome and leader of the Catholic Church.
