I went to adoration last night before the church closes at 7:00 pm, I noticed that the Deacon conducted a little service called the Hour of Reaparation. Can someone explain to me what that is, we said the Rosary and Divine Chaplet and some prayers, is this done every night before the end of Adoration. What is the purpose of it. And what is that little piece in the center of the cross that the deacon removes and puts in the tabernacle?

During adoration, the Blessed Sacrament (the consecrated Host, the Eucharist, which is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ under the form of bread) is placed in a lunette (a small round disk with a glass face) and that lunette is placed in the center of a monstrance (often in the shape of a sunburst). An “hour of reparation” is, generally speaking, an hour of prayer (it doesn’t necessarily have to be during Eucharistic Adoration) devoted to penance (making reparation for some wrongdoing). I would expect that the deacon led the group in an hour of reparation for sins against the Blessed Sacrament (profanation, blasphemy, etc.); the Divine Mercy Chaplet is often prayed for that purpose, seeking the mercy of God for sins committed against the Most Holy Eucharist. This reparation is usually in the context of praying for other people’s sins.

The priest ordinarily wears a cope, which is like a large cape, when exposing and reposing the Blessed Sacrament, but he puts the humeral veil over the cope before giving the benediction. The humeral veil has concealed pockets for his hands so he does not contact the monstrance while lifting it. Traditionally, the veil is placed on the priest’s shoulders by an acolyte while the priest is kneeling, and removed in the same manner after the benediction.

They can be done at any time, but some people might make a personal hour of reparation in the evening to atone for sins committed earlier that day. It is always a good practice to make an examination of conscience and act of contrition before going to bed for the night.

The hour of reperation or a holy hour is an hour of pray and asking forgiveness from God. The small piece called a lunette or a luna is a small glass disc that contains a host. It is placed in the monstrance for adoration.
