As we remember at mass today the feast of the holy Innocents.

Do we have any idea how many lifes were lost ? I have been reading online but information is vague

In the eastern tradition the number is 14,000, commemorated on December 29 by the Byzantine Catholic Church, and also the 20,000 Martyrs of Nicomedia (302 A.D., now called Izmit, Turkey) on December 28.
 
I would think at least a few hundred, considering that Herod was probably paranoid but not stupid. He would have gathered children from cities and towns across all Judea. Even John the Baptist would have been a target but Elizabeth hid him in the wilderness where he stayed.
