The mass is more than a historical enactment, the Pope told pilgrims. We have the same experience the disciples had in the Gospels when Jesus appeared to them after the resurrection. Among other things, the Pope also told these pilgrims that from the risen Christ spring baptism and the eucharist, and those who approach them with faith receive the gift of eternal life. We also have the same experience as Mary and John standing at the foot of the cross, as Christ (through the person of the priest) offers himself to the Father in an unbloody Sacrifce, the same as the Holy Sacrifice on the Cross.
