Hello there,
I’m wondering if the Saturday evening mass also fullfills the Sunday obligation if there is a feast on Sunday (christ king).

In my case I participated in the Saturday evening mass before Christ King Sunday and I was invited to a worship night on Sunday evening. I thought it would be a worship evening with holy mass and I didn’t double check. But unfortunately it was just a worship night without mass.

So in my case with the Chirst King Sunday: Is the obligation fulfilled?

Thanks for your help.
God bless.

Was the Mass for Christ the King or was it the proper Mass for that Saturday?

The obligation may be fulfilled on the day of precept or the evening of the previous day. The prayers and readings used don’t matter. If you went to a wedding Mass at 5 pm on a Saturday, you would have fulfilled your obligation.

If there was no mass, but simply a worship service, then you did not fulfill your obligation. It may not be a mortal sin, however, since you did not deliberately “intend” to miss mass. I would mention this in confession, just in case. You may have realized it was not a mass at the time you were there, but knowing that, and choosing not to go on Sunday would be more serious. (Unless of course, you were prohibited by work or something essential.)
It was the mass for Christ the King. Sunday liturgy.
Now you have me confused. I read that you described it as a worship service, but not a mass? Can you clarify?

It’s not a case of “most” Masses on Saturday evening fulfill the obligation. All Masses on Saturday evening fulfill the Sunday obligation. It doesn’t matter what the readings are, it only matters that the Mass is in the evening (usually defined as after 4 pm).

Okay, I attended Saturday evening Holy Mass after 7 pm with the readings of Sunday (Christ the King) so I guess I’m good.

Thank you all for your fast replies.
God bless

Okay to make it more clear:

Saturday evening: Holy Mass with readings of Sunday

Sunday evening: Intention to go to a worship night with holy mass. but it was only a worship night without mass

Mass is Mass is Mass. The law only says we have to attend Mass to fulfill the obligation. It doesn’t say what kind of Mass. This is why you can go to an Extraordinary Form Mass or Byzantine Divine Liturgy and still fulfill your obligation, even though they would have very different calendars and proper texts in many cases.

In my post (now withdrawn) I wrote “most” simply because I don’t know if the same rule applies in every place in the world. I assume the local Bishop decides that.

I knew the Mass is Mass part, but I did not know that a Saturday evening Mass proper for that day could also count towards one’s Sunday obligation. I know EF and Sunday weddings do, but not Saturday evening ones!

Thank you, Father, for being so patient with us dead-horse beaters. 🙂 Now I’m outta here! 💥

If any Mass on Sunday can fulfill the obligation, then so can any Mass on the evening before. The law specifies a time period for fulfilling the obligation (the day itself or the evening of the previous day) and the action which must be completed to fulfill the obligation (attend Mass). So if you check both those boxes, you’re good. Doesn’t matter what the other details are. When I say my private Mass on a Saturday afternoon on a day where I wasn’t scheduled for a public one, I’ve fulfilled my Sunday obligation, regardless of what the texts of the Mass are. I’ll usually offer the Mass of the day, most of the time EF, even though it’s within the time frame of “evening” and would otherwise be the texts for Sunday.

My apologies. I read your post wrong. I was believing that the worship service was Saturday night, so it appeared that you missed mass. Thanks for clarifying.

In the Holy Land, days are counted from sundown to sundown. That’s why when Jesus died on Friday afternoon, He was buried before sundown, which would begin Sabbath . Ergo Friday at sunset, to sundown Saturday the Sabbath day, and sundown Saturday begins Sunday.

We consider it the same way for Saturday sunset for Sunday mass…
