Moderators . . . I checked the rules and didn’t see any reference to linking to a blogpost; Monsignor Charles Pope is the writer. Please delete and forgive me if I’m in error in posting this. **He has a powerful and great suggestion, though.

Monsignor Pope is a terrific writer and thinker **- In posting this, merely wanted to let everyone know, both about him and his blog, and his idea.

thanks, the next time i see the Msgr. i’ll want to thank him also for this column 👍

Did he mention how we would refer to natural marriages? What about two non baptized who are validly married?

I recommend posting a direct link to the blog article you are referencing:

blog.adw.org/2013/06/do-we-need-to-set-aside-the-word-marriage-and-use-holy-matrimony-exclusively/

That will make it easier for latecomers to the thread to find it after Msgr. Pope posts a few more articles and drives that one down the page.

I do like Msgr. Pope’s articles and I usually agree with him. I don’t agree here, though. I refuse to abandon the word “marriage” to those who wish to redefine it.

Besides, non-Catholics validly marry one another. Are we going to refer to a valid, non-sacramental marriage between two unbaptized people as “Holy Matrimony”? I think that would cause more confusion than it would alleviate.

Dropping the word “marriage” would only cause further confusion. It is better just to continue to refer to valid marriages as such, and continue to educate people in what marriage actually is.
