Dear Brothers and Sisters,…Holy Mother! pierce me through;
In my heart each wound renew
Of my Saviour crucified…
This stanza from the Hymn, “Stabat Mater” (literally “the Mother was standing”) has been echoing in my heart this Lenten season, and as we approach Good Friday, during this Holy Week, I am mindful of it again, in connection with two other threads on CAF.
The two threads: “Mary’s Apostolic Mission” and “Mary’s maternal responsibility is a continuous mission…” have given me much to ponder. As Mary stood beneath the Cross, gazing upon the Face of her Crucified Son, what work was the Holy Spirit accomplishing in her soul? As a Mother, how truly she suffered with Jesus! How truly was Simeon’s prophecy fulfilled that a sword would pierce her also! Yet, she was to live through this and continue on earth, while Jesus would rise again and then ascend to heaven. In Mary we see both Mother of Sorrows and Cause of our Joy. She shows us our own journey…
What work will the Holy Spirit do in us? What work is He doing now? Are our hearts open? Can we be moved to stand with Mary in spirit and share her sorrow at His Cross? Can we not ask to share in the pain of Jesus and Mary on Calvary? By God’s Grace, I believe we can and by so doing, pray to deepen our faith, hope and above all charity. This is part of our mission, our maternal responsibility as “Mother Church” to continue in our time, with Mary, the Apostolic Mission of Christ.
