Holy of Holies During the Crucifixion of Jesus

Has anyone uncovered information as to what was in the Holy of Holies at the time of Jesus’ Crucifixion? I realize that (in 2Maccabees 2:4-6), Jeremiah hides the Tent, Ark, and Altar in the mountain where Moses had gone up and had seen the inheritance of God. Jeremiah also declares “The place shall be unknown until God gathers his people together again and shows His mercy.” So when “the veil was torn in two from top to bottom,” (Matthew 27:51), what was contained in the Holy of Holies? After the Exile, the Holy of Holies contained nothing actually, the Ark’s whereabouts becoming unknown (and many stories about what happened to it). The Holy of Holies in the new Temple was empty, but the ceremonies during the Day of Atonement were apparently continued as if the Ark was still in it.

After the Exile, the Holy of Holies contained nothing actually, the Ark’s whereabouts becoming unknown (and many stories about what happened to it). The Holy of Holies in the new Temple was empty, but the ceremonies during the Day of Atonement were apparently continued as if the Ark was still in it.

I once heard a teaching by Kenneth Hagin (a Protestant minister) that at the moment Jesus was crucified an angel took hold of the curtain that separated the Holy of Holies and ripped it in half from top to bottom
He said this curtain was heavy and quite thick.

However, it is written that, when the Roman were fixing to lay siege to Jerusalem, the doors of the Temple burst open on their own and a voice was heard that said, “Come, let Us leave this place never to return”. I’m going off of memory, so some of the details may be off, but the main gist is rather certain.

However, it is written that, when the Roman were fixing to lay siege to Jerusalem, the doors of the Temple burst open on their own and a voice was heard that said, “Come, let Us leave this place never to return”. I’m going off of memory, so some of the details may be off, but the main gist is rather certain.

That was Josephus. He reports omens which supposedly happened at the eve of the destruction of the Temple, one of which was the eastern gate of the Temple opening by itself. Some actually interpreted this as a good sign, others as an evil portent. Other omens reported include a very bright light shining from the sanctuary, “a star resembling a sword,” and a cow giving birth to a lamb. Later rabbinic literature also reports this particular omen along with others, albeit places them forty years before AD 70. (The symbolic value of forty might have something to do with that.)
